Review: Rachel Fulton really wrote two studies in one book here. The first deals with the development of the devotion to the crucified Christ from 800 to 1100. Her most original idea in this section is the linking of the emerging devotion to the crucified Christ and the Eucharist to millennial anxieties. The second study focuses on the emerging devotion to Mary as the compassionate mother of Christ in commentaries on the Song of Songs. Overall, this is an excellent work. I would like to have seen more discussion of sermons preached on Marian festivals during the twelth century.
