Summary: A tough read but worth it.
Review: As a lay person teaching Sunday School to adults, I often need a semi-scholarly source to enrich the lessons. I used Shillington's book for this purpose when we studied the parables of Jesus. His chapter authors provided enough detail that it was not necessary to seek out the referenced texts. However, I appreciated the references relating to the Gospel of Thomas and other writings less familiar to the lay reader. The section of the book on Parables of the Land provides a rich description of life in first century Israel.
