Charles Robb remembers the day in June 1998 when the president of his ad agency told him that an anonymous client wanted the agency to create a billboard campaign that would bring people back to God. This client wanted to reach people who had drifted away from the church or synagogue and get them thinking about having a relationship with God in their everyday lives. "At the time I thought it somewhat ironic that I would be asked to work on an advertising campaign designed to reach... well, me," writes Robb. Ultimately Robb and his coworkers tackled the assignment with so much grace and humor that the billboards became a national phenomenon (gaining attention on CNN and World News Tonight). The idea was to have God offer a simple message written on a black background with bold white type.
