Rating: Summary: Editors Notes to the Hymnal 1940 Review: This is a large type edition of the Hymnal Companion. It is a large book, quite heavy, bound in black cloth. It is arranged in the same order as the Hymnal of course, and provides the reasoning behind the music selected for inclusion. Practically speaking, this means an explanation of its popularity, its origin, the nature of the lyrics (borrowed, composed, variations, etc.) and occasionally on the music itself.I am not a choirmaster but am a chorister at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Rosemont, Pennsylvania. Having owned the Companion for several years, I find it an invaluable guide to my contribution to the musical ministry and a Godsend to me helping learn, enjoy and worship the grand music of our tradition.
