Summary: Searching for Meaning
Review: Dr. Givler's book is full of practical advice and individual medical case scenarios, written in simple language, that help the reader on `the journey you did not choose.' Whether you are the spouse, the friend, the relative, or the treating doctor, this book is for you. It provides a framework from which to start if `cancer' has become a part of your life, or the life of someone you care about or for whom you provide care.

Dr. Givler's book, along with "A Guide to Medical Resources" outlined within the book, would have been very helpful, not only for me, but my mother and her siblings, since my grandmother died of cervical cancer is 1984. (I have since passed my copy of this wonderful book on to one of my mother's sisters, and I have already asked a dear friend of mine if she would like a copy - her brother-in-law has cancer.)

By the time you get to the last chapter of Amy Givler's book, "Searching for Meaning," you're familiar enough with her rhythmic style of writing that you expect, and need the profound insights and quotes. Dr. Givler's book gives perspective on a life changing, life threatening situation in the context of faith, something many unknowingly search for and few ever find.

Summary: The Gear You Have to Get!
Review: Journeys we don't want to take--we've all been there or will have to go there one day. As a health professional I assist people on those journeys. Now I have some essential gear to suggest for the road--Amy Givler's guide for navigating the cancer maze. Dr. Givler's style is like a long draw of well water for a parched traveller. She relates her personal journey on the cancer road; you are with her from the first discovery until the present. Along the way, you meet others who are trodding the same path with their families and friends. Givler attacks the hard questions but doesn't leave you hanging for answers. This book is reader-friendly--informative yet warm, frank yet hopeful. I am already suggesting it to friends, pastors, and purchasing it for a local oncologist. "Hope in the Face of Cancer"--gear you have to get!

Review: This book is a fantastic resource for all cancer patients, but especially for newly-diagnosed cancer patients. Written by an MD who has cancer, it provides common sense guidance for many aspects of treating and living with cancer. I highly recommend this book for patients who have just been diagnosed. Read this book before you do anything! It is also valuable for cancer patients who have been diagnosed with a recurrence. An easy read, it is well worth the few dollars you will spend to own it.

Summary: Truly a book of Hope!
Review: This book is a great resource for people who are dealing with cancer. It truly is a book of hope, a survival guide for those on a difficult journey. The last words of Dr. Givler's book are truly inspiring: "When I look back, I see the difficult experiences of my life helping to strengthen my character and draw me closer to God. Knowing that this has been true in the past gives me confidence that it will also be true in the future.

Summary: A wise yet friendly hand to hold when facing cancer
Review: Whether you have cancer or know a friend or loved one who does, this is an excellent new book to guide you through the emotional and medical maze. It's written from the perspective of a Christian doctor who is herself a cancer survivor. Hope in the Face of Cancer: A Survival Guide for the Journey You Did Not Choose by Amy Givler, M.D. (published by Harvest House) is suitable for all those touched by cancer. Dr. Givler has written for us the book that she wanted when first diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. It's practical, sensible, personal, spiritual (but not heavy-handed), and encouraging.

In fact, I'd recommend this book even if you don't have cancer. At least keep a copy on hand to read or to give to someone immediately upon diagnosis. It can be an anchor in the storm of cancer, an understanding and helpful hand to hold, as emotions swirl within and all kinds of important and immediate decisions need to be made.
