Summary: Beware of Bias!
Review: Despite many helpful insights into the supernatural, Mrs. Penn-Lewis' background leaves much to be desired. From The New International Dictionary of Pentecostal & Charismatic Movements by S.M. Burgess, ed., it is stated that she & F.B. Meyer were instrumental in suppressing the Welsh Revival of 1904-05. She also "took control" of Evan Roberts, the Revival leader, by "censoring his mail & keeping him from the public". He lived in their household for years.
In the original book, Jesse Penn-Lewis attributed the ecstatic manifestations of the Revival to demonic influences. She also put Mr. Roberts name (as co-author) on the book to lend it authenticity.
Thus, any reader of the charismatic/pentecostal persuasion needs to be aware of this. I recommend Pigs in the Parlor by the Hammonds, plus books by Derek Prince: Spiritual Warfare, They Shall Expel Demons, Blessing or Curse---You Can Choose.

Summary: Missing pieces...
Review: I am in the process of reading this book. I have both the abridged and unabridged version. The abridged version leaves MUCH to be desired. They took the heart out of much of what Ms. Lewis was trying to get across. I highly recommend finding the unabridged version. It will open your eyes to how Satan and his "beast of the field" work in the lives of Christians today. This is an excellent book!

Summary: Good book, exposes the attacks of the enemy in a unique way.
Review: I liked this book, it sheds much light on demonic operations. The schemes of the devil, as well as the attributes of evil spirits and their way of attack is exposed. I read this book twice, one time after the other. It is a difficult book to read, one that takes time because of the nature of the subject. I agree with at least 85% of it, however it does not shed a favorable light on those Christians who manifest speaking in tounges, prophecy, etc. The author is very conservative and that is o.k. but Charasmatic readers may find a tidbit of the author's analysis offensive. Surely, as Christians we can look over those things we don't agree with, in order to learn more about the subject matter at hand.

Summary: Though Unabridged, yet not Complete ...
Review: I only found out yesterday that Thomas Lowe when publishing the unabridged edition, has also left out a few chapters, yes, from the UNabridged edition. There are a few chapters missing. He left them out because the churches found them too controversial. Thomas Lowe also does NOT have the original rights for publication. Actually it is a person in England, I don't know for sure whether he is still alive. I'm a Dutch translator and I learned this from people working on the Dutch translation.

Summary: one of the top 3 books on the subject
Review: Mark Bubeck's "Overcoming the Adversary" discusses the
religious Ephesians 6 text in general. "Pigs in the
Parlor" gives a good overview. This book gives the
nuts and bolts of details needed. This UNABRIDGED edition of a classic covers
comprehensively the subject of spiritual warfare.
There are numerous lists and 2 very significant
diagrams in the book which summarize what
is a well thought out and organized discussion
focusing on the potential problems of
passivity, ignorance, and deception in a
person's life. The summary diagram on page 102 is
particularly instructive. It gives lists of
specific examples in 6 different areas:
how evil spirits deceive
the ground given for deception
where they enter
symptoms of their presence
excuses used to cover ground
effects in and through the believer. A list on page 253 gives a correspondence
with the spiritual weaponry discussed in
Ephesians 6, in terms of concepts
discussed in the book. Besides being better organized than the
other editions of this book, it also uses
a much more beautiful type font.

Summary: Great insight to Spiritual Warfare - Know your Publishers
Review: The unabridged edition is the best and I know Christian Literature Crusade carries this. The unabridged must have the tableof true and counterfiet manifestations of the Spirit of God in the back of the book to be most helpful. (1) Take Heed - The Whitaker House (a Pentecostal publisher) has removed this section. (2) Take Heed - The unabridged edition contains the doctrines that Satan can possess the true believer (like Niel T Anderson. Satan is everywhere and an inbalance in doctrine)and secondary, that Baptism of the Holy Spirit is after salvation. With these 2 cautions this book is a classic which transcends the cultures and philosophies of our time.

Summary: Must read...
Review: There is not enough preached on warfare these days. Paul stated over and over in the NT that we don't fight against flesh and blood but against demons! Don't fool with the unabridged version unless you are young in the faith. Get this book and books by Neil Anderson as well. This is a great book that every pastor and Sunday School teacher should read. Satan is alive and well. If you are ignorant of warfare and his devices, then you are probably losing the war!

Summary: Not against flesh & blood!
Review: This author deals with discerning of the spirits, testing them as instructed in scripture. Something mysteriously missing from the modern church. This of course explains why false teachers & false doctrines are deceiving so many people. The seducing spirits are having a field day! People seek after an `experience' a sign, vision or some outward manifestation that God is real. In doing so satan has obliged them, fulfilling their fleshly desires and substituting the `sign' for purity of heart & righteousness of life.
Experience not based on the solid foundation of truth is sinking sand. Unless you measure everything by the Word of God, the spirits speaking lies in hypocrisy will lead you into error. This is shown clearly throughout the book. You will begin to understand how we wrestle not against flesh and blood and how the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but spiritual in pulling down strongholds. These strongholds must be brought down by the truth lest we be swept away to eternal ruin. Mr. Lewis succeeds in showing us what we up against and gives plenty of particle advice to discern the spirits, but he fails miserably in issuing the stern warnings of scripture to his readers against being led away into the error of the wicked. The Bible makes very clear that it's our soul the devil wants to reclaim. He can do so by leading you into sin or into error. Beware of his devices lest you also fall from your own steadfast position in Christ! 2Pet3:17

Summary: discussion of corrections w/o mumbo-jumbo of any kind
Review: This is entirely practical and is actually geared
more toward self-help rather than chanting over
some other poor soul via ranting and raving about
their evil spirits. It also is easy to "skim" through this without
having to read every intricate detail and still
get a good feeling for what's being discussed.
