Rating: Summary: Learned Something but not what I was hoping for Review: I did like this book for other reasons than its ability to help me look at food differently (I can easily gorge myself on cookies... even after reading the book). BUT Joyce mentioned how she gave up caffiene because it was hurting her body and not helping. She also mentioned in the book about The Tree that Adam and Eve were not to eat from. Out of those two subjects she mentioned it made me think of how people are always saying "If I were Adam or Eve, I wouldnt have eaten the forbidden fruit." So I challenged myself to give something up that "hurt" my body and wasnt good to eat anyways. ICE CREAM was my "tree". My body doesnt like ice cream though I LOVE IT. It makes me cramp... ANYWAYS my point is... though the book did not take me where I was hoping (ie a better view of food) it did take me to where I have given up my passion for Ice Cream for good. Its been 3 months or so and i have no desire for it. So maybe the book did help me. I dont really know!
Rating: Summary: Good basic book Review: I love Joyce Meyer and I feel like she has a true talent in expressing how we can change our lives. I think if you are someone with a true eating disorder or a food addiction then you still will require some additional help but Joyce does give her style of advice in her true Joyce-style of talking. I readily admit you won't find everything you need in this book if you struggle with a serious food addiction but it will make a nice addition to your library. For me, there is a lot of more complex things going on with why I struggle with food etc. but I still like this book and reread it. The basic premise is always that we can rely on Christ to strengthen and heal us and if you are a Joyce fan you will want this one.Joyce helps us with the spiritual and emotional aspects of overeating. If you are a compulsive eater though and you need to know what is making you biologically crave sweets, there IS a reason. If you are a carbohydrate/sugar addict like me you can even have your blood glucose tested and see if your levels are high. If you are insulin resistant, you will know easily by asking yourself if you have constant cravings for sweets and other high carb foods. If so, you need to RUn, not walk but run to the store and buy the Atkins book. Forget all the people who bash it. Joyce says all the time "people only critize you when they want something you have BUT they are not willing to do what you did to get it." A lot of carb addicts are not willing to give up the addictive substance but if you are willing, Atkins gives you a way to get through the carb withdrawals and find peace finally. No more cravings. These 2 books will help you greatly in your journey.
Rating: Summary: Look to God for self control, not your body! Review: Joyce Meyer takes a spiritual approach to losing weight. I know about this struggle because two years ago I was up to 275 pounds and got down to 180 by last summer, but I am back up to 205 again. Joyce points out that the reason why we go to food for comfort is because we are listening to our physicial, carnal, fleshy bodies to do something that is not good for us instead of listening to our spiritual hunger and controlling our eating. Joyce tells the story of Esau selling his birthright to his brother Jacob for a bowl of stew to demonstrate how the flesh can do some weird things that we really don't want it to do. Joyce tells us to look to God for guidence on what to eat, when to eat, and not to listen to our carnal desires. For instance, she brings up a story of Do you really want an ice cream sunday for breakfast? Maybe you want that sugary goodness, but step back and pray and ask your soul Do I really want this junk in my body? She emphasizes a relationship with the Holy Spirit that will guide you in your weight loss journey. I found the book to be a very good experience for me because it incorporated God's teachings into eating right! Every Christian should read this book because I really feel that it has changed my outlook on food. For instance, I binged on Easter candy this morning, but now that I have stood back and realized what I have done, I am determined not to munch on it anymore and if I do, to do it in moderation. Moderation is the key to losing weight in this book- God intended you to eat all foods, but in moderation. The twelve reasons people overeat are as follows: Reason 1: Lack of Knowledge Reason 2: Lack of a Balanced Diet Reason 3: Lack of Exercise Reason 4: Bad Eating Habits Reason 5: Unbalanced Metabolism Reason 6: Spiritual Unfulfillment Reason 7: Emotional Unfulfillment Reason 8: Loneliness, Loss and Boredom Reason 9: Preoccupation with Food Reason 10: Impulsee Eating Reason 11: Passive Eating Reason 12: Lack of Self- Denial The book includes prayers for you to pray when you are having trouble controlling yourself, and I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it!!
