Summary: A excellent collection of materials
Review: Sernett's volume is the single-best collection of primary materials related to the African-American religious experinece. It attemps to piece together important religious narratives from colonial time until the present. As such, documents include slave narratives, narratives from early church founders (Allen, Jarena Lee, etc.), and documents from the civil rights and black power movement. The documents are all fairly condensed and, as such, it is ideal for the class room. It would be an excellent text to use in an African American religion, African American history, Black Church, or American Religious history survey course.
