Review: An excellent commentary by an able OT scholar. I found Stuart's research and exegesis to be very insighful. This is a "must have" commentary on every OT student's bookshelf.

Summary: I was enormously disappointed.
Review: The Word Biblical Commentaries are (rightly) known for their strict attention to the text and learned Evangelical commentary. When I needed several commentaries expressing various points of view in a class I was teaching on the Minor Prophets, naturally I chose to include this volume. Upon learning about Dr. Stuart's background and teaching situation, I was even more eager to delve into it.BOY was I disappointed! Dr. Stuart seems to take the attitude (fostered by comments on the inside dust jacket) that essentially everything we've been taught or think we know about the Minor Prophets is wrong -- and that he can show us the light! How fortunate for us! Not only was I soured by the attitude, I was also soured by the lack of regard for Jewish or Patristic sources in his exegesis. I was especially disappointed in his work on Hosea. Two stars, because, as a scholar, I can recognize the work which went into the book -- but that's all. Try "Anchor", try "Interpretation", try "Ancient Christian Commentaries", etc. before you try this one.

Summary: Excellent commentary!
Review: This is one of the best commentaries you could buy for these minor prophets. Douglas Stuart does an excellent job expositing the texts of each book. I bought this mainly for Hosea, but have been thankful to have excellent evangelical scholarship applied to Joel and Jonah as well. I highly recommend this for your library.
