Summary: The best available audio of the ESV
Review: The CDs come in a compact leatherette pack, easily stored in your car or elsewhere. The CDs each have their own sleeve, to avoid scratching.

Max McLean is simply the best. He has a great theatrical voice, with good flow and enunciation. He keeps your attention and emphasizes the parts that should be emphasized. Great product.

My only disappointment is that he does not record the ESV with the same fervor that he translated the Revelations CD for the Holman Christian Standard Bible, with which he demonstrated much more inflection and passion. Maybe the marketers had him tone it down; I don't know. At any rate, his recording is still the best.

The competitor- the ESV CD set put out by Crossway Publishing with a different reader- has a few drawbacks, in my opinion. I think that their reader over-enunciates, making the text sound artificial. He also doesn't emphsize the text where I think it should be emphasized. Also, the product itself has the CDs stacked together in two separate plastic boxes, which are a little bulky. The CDs are harder to find stacked in the box and they are more prone to scratching when stored this way.

So...when you order your CD set for the ESV, make sure you get the Max McLean recording; you won't regret it.

(On a side note, if you prefer the NIV translation Max McLean has a highly praised set of CDs, recommended by hank Handegraaf (Bible Answer Man). I agree that the NIV is more natural and flows better than the ESV, but the ESV is more literal and I believe it to handle theological issues more accurately.)

Enjoy. God bless your listening.

Summary: wise in his own eyes
Review: What a heartbreaking disappointment. Max McLean's original recording of the NT was anointed, like God reading his Word to the listener through McLean. The original OT was tedious, a work by someone impressed with their own press releases, thrilled with the sound of his own voice. This re-recording is even worse than the old OT production. McLean is even more pompous. Arrogance resounds throughout, out-shouting the Word. There is not a shred of honest zeal in this commercial venture. I'm sure the LORD will provide another voice to draw us into His testimony... until then... if you can find a copy of the original New Testament release buy it. Buy several and bless everyone you can. If not search for another artist. Remember He told us that faith comes by hearing...
