Rating: Summary: A Christian-Jew in a Communist Country Review: What a powerful book! Wurmbrand holds nothing back as he relates his many years in a Communist prison. Beaten, starved, totured... at yet he still came out of prison preaching about God's never-failing love. In his son's book BETWEEN HAMMER & SICKLE (by Mihai Wurmbrand) he gives a most powerful and awe-inspiring message to his son: "Mihai, you know that in prison I had no Bible. I have forgotten it. I have forgotten all my theology. But these things I know for sure. First, there is a living God and he is our loving father. Second, Jesus Christ is the savior and bridegroom of our souls. Third, the Holy Spirit works in us to make us more and more Christ-like. Fourth, there exists beyond question an eternal life. And lastly, love is the best of ways. This is what I have learned in prison." If that doesn't stir you, what does? ...A Christian-Jew in a Communist Country. If you think you need an example of a true Believer, then you should definitely read TORTURED FOR CHRIST and BETWEEN HAMMER & SICKLE.
Rating: Summary: Counting everything as meaningless compared to Christ Review: When I read this book it did not take long for me to be overwhelmed by the stories. Richard Wurmbrand is not only an incredible writer, but is an incredible man of God. He talks about how hard it was to endure the Communist desire to see him deny his faith, but because of the strength given him by Christ, He was able to stand firm in his faith and never budge. He truly is a hero of the faith, and this book is what first sparked my desire to find out what is going on in the world as far as persecution is concerned. Richard Wurmbrand is now my personal hero, and is an incredible encouragement to me. Christ, through him, has taught me that I don't truly understand what it means to count everything else as worthless compared to Christ. This is a must read book, along with the sequal to "Tortured for Christ", the book "From Suffering to Triumph".
Rating: Summary: A Seminal Work on a Too-Often-Ignored Subject Review: While American Christians waste untold millions of dollars every year pandering to their own vanities (multimillion-dollar megachurches, senior superpastors, trying to elect "Christian" politicians, etc.), most of the Church around the world is suffering persecution, discrimination and privation for the Lord Jesus Christ. During the last century, God raised up a man to come to the West and wake us up. Tortured for Christ is an autobiographical work, but it goes far beyond biography. Richard Wurmbrand (1909-2001) was not only brilliant, but also learned. As will be gleaned from his many works, his knowledge of most matters was encyclopedic. In discussing the questions of persecution and suffering, he was moreover able to process this vast knowledge through his Jewish worldview, which unlike the prevailing Western worldview involves a great deal of non-linear thinking. Because of this, he was able to posit penetrating questions and produce poignant answers that never would have occurred to many of his readers. Wurmbrand was not only a pastor, but an outstanding apologist for the Christian faith. Yet his defense of the faith was never merely intellectual. I am convinced he understood that theology worthy of the name must be forged in the fires of persecution. When Christians are not called on to suffer for their faith, they begin turning their attention to trivial controversies (the Calvinist-Armininan and textual/translational squabbles going on today are examples). When one's own life and the credibility of the gospel are at stake, the issues change. Richard Wurmbrand was one of the first believers to publicize the plight of the Persecuted and Suffering Church in our generation. In doing so, he has helped to refocus our attention onto the essentials of the gospel. I hope the Western Church will begin to give heed to the message of Tortured for Christ. Otherwise she is wasting her time on foolish preoccupations and squandering what the Lord Jesus Christ died to bestow upon her.
