Rating: Summary: I've read it - love it - that's why i'm buying my own copy! Review: This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. Lily is a wonderful character. She is an American 24 year old woman who was raised her entire life in Kashien. Her father raised her strictly as a Kashienese woman after her mother past away. Her brother Jeff who had moved to the Hawaiian islands finally convinced his father to allow her to visit the states for her very first time. Lily and all those around her battle with culture shock, spiritual battles, and realizing God's will for their lives. This is a story that may seem it would never come true. But that is why it is called a story. Lori Wick is an excellent writer who tells stories in a way that we can look at the characters as roll models of how a Christian should live, think, pray, and love. You will fall in love with the characters and when you're done reading it you'll want to read it again - I did!!
Rating: Summary: Inspiring, Entertaining and Touching! Review: This is the first book of Lori Wick's I've read. I've almost finished the book, and I simply love it! I grew to care very much about the characters and their story. It made me laugh and cry! It made me take a look at my own spiritual life and see some things I could do differently to become more like Christ. It made me thankful for my family and friends, and especially my dear husband. It was simply a wonderful book.Regarding the earlier negative review, I enjoyed the changing point-of-view, as I'm always wondering what all the characters are thinking, and she made it very clear whose POV it was, never making you guess. An author has the right to take creative liberties with his or her work and I think Lori Wick has done so to her, and our, advantage. I believe the characters and their actions were very plausible and completely in line with their personalities. Never were they boring or predictible, but I did not react in disbelief at their words or actions either. They were dynamic, interesting characters. Bamboo and Lace was a captivating book and I'm a better person for having read it. I will be reading many more works of Lori Wick's. Enjoy the book!
Rating: Summary: Another wonderful Contempory Christian novel by Lori Wick! Review: To be honest, the title of Lori Wick's newest novel had me wondering what I would be in store for. (The title will make perfect sense about 3/4 of the way through the novel...it is exactly right.) I was so happy to read the back cover and realize it was a contemporary piece set in Hawaii. Once again, Mrs. Wick has created a novel with a touching plot, dynamic characters, and God-inspired messages of self-worth, anger, showing love, submission, adoption, and much more. Lily Walsh has lived her whole life in Kashien (an Asian village country) with her domineering missionary father, but now at the age of 24 is granted the opportunity to visit her brother in Hawaii. Lily's discovering of the modern conviences of life quickly makes her endearing to the reader. (I'll never chew another piece of gum without thinking of Lily!) The main male character in the novel, Gabe Kapaia, is a close friend of Lily's brother and the moment Gabe and Lily meet everyone knows, except them for awhile of course, that they are perfect for each other. Through several twisting turns, it is obvious that God has carefully orchstrated their entire lives for them to meet at this time and place. A lesson to us all to WAIT on the Lord and surrender our ALL to Him. While 440 pages seems like quite a few pages, the length is perfect as it takes the reader past the "typcial" ending of many contemporary pieces. I'll be honest and admit that I spent an entire Saturday afternoon and evening outside on a lawn chair reading Mrs. Wick's book. (The only time I stopped was to run inside the house and apply some sun screen! Read the book, you'll understand that comment!) You won't regret any time you spend reading this book. Read it with an open mind and willing heart.
Rating: Summary: Not one of her Best Review: Well, I'd really been expecting more when I bought this book as it was a single novel like Sophie's Heart, which I loved. But this book was really lacking a lot of the "stuff" that makes a story enchanting. It is well-written, yet I think the plot could use some more work. It was rather long, and I felt the characters were somewhat undeveloped. Most of the story revolved around everyday life, and when there were interesting events, I think they could have been developed to a greater extent.
