Rating: Summary: Another great romance . . . Review: Whispers By Robin Jones GunnWhispers, by Robin Jones Gunn, is about Teri Moreno, a young woman from California, who struggles to find a relationship with abiding love. The words " I'll wait right here, until it's a yes, I love you," came off the lips of someone Teri thought she could never love, someone she thought she wasn't right for, but the words touched her, deeply. Was it the love she had waited for? Battling through past relationships, and encountering new ones, Teri has to decipher which relationships will truly last. Teri Moreno, a twenty-five-year-old woman, decides to visit her sister, Anita, and brother in law, Dan, in Maui for a five-week summer getaway. She was anxious to see Mark, whom she met last summer on her previous trip to Maui. That summer they had clicked, but now that she was back on the island, things were strained between them. Teri was trying to sort things out and seek God's will, but she knew they were through. Unexpectedly she bumped into Scott Robinson at a party. Scott was a former classmate from high school. When Scott asked her to go sailing on his yacht Teri couldn't resist. After a couple of weeks of seeing each other Anita questioned Scott's faith. Scott said he was a Christian, but he didn't act like one. Anita tried telling Teri this, but Teri only made excuses for him. Scott wanted Teri to move to Maui and stay there for good. Teri thought he wanted to marry her, but when she found out that he wanted her to live with him, she drew the line, and called it quits. Her vacation ended and she returned to her job in California teaching Spanish at a school in her town. During Christmas break, she went to visit her family. They received a call from Dan. He told them that Anita was in labor. Teri, her mother, and her grandmother took the first flight they could to Maui. Dan had sent Gordon Allistar to the airport to take them to the hospital. Teri had known Gordon through Dan and Anita's church, and also through their job. When they first met, Teri thought Gordon as a quirky Australian, with a heart for God. Gordon was studying to be a minister and he hoped to start a church in Maui. During her relationship with Scott, Teri sought the advice of Gordon. Gordon was always more caring and helpful then Scott was. She admired his easy-going personality. Gordon was a great help to Teri's family. Teri's mother and grandmother adored Gordon. They were certain that he was 'the one', but Teri thought they were crazy. After Anita and Dan were settled with the baby, Teri, her mother, and grandmother decide to leave. Gordon took Teri to the airport, and he proposed. After all this time, he had truly loved her and admired her, but Teri didn't accept his proposal. She boarded the plane, and after a twenty-five minute plane delay, her heart truly spoke, indeed she did love Gordon Allistar. Teri insisted on them letting her off the plane, even though she was uncertain Gordon would still be waiting for her, but he was there, he had "Waited right there until it's was a yes." She had found her true love, after all the heartbreaks she had been through, God had the perfect plan for her life. A key factor in this book was trusting God, and God's will for your life. In this book, Teri wasn't so sure God really cared about her, but in the end, she could see God had it planned out all along. Not only did Gordon love Teri, but Gordon also loved God with all his heart. This book emphasizes God's perfect timing. I would recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Still my favorite Review: Whispers is still my favorite book of the Glenbrooke series, although I haven't yet read Wildflowers. I thought the characters were great. Scott got on my nerves though! Arrogant and fake as can be! I sometimes wanted to smack her and say can't you see?? but she was looking for fireworks, and they were there with Scott. It took lectures from Anita and time with Gordon and Scott revealing his true character for her to realize there's more to a relationship than fireworks. I really liked Gordon. He sincerely loves God, and Teri, and he doesn't care who knows it, or what people think of him. I didn't see anything wrong with the communion bit. I think it was there to demonstrate how clumsy he is, but he's charming and devoted to God, so he continued with the communion service anyway, and the congregation loved it. I don't think the intent was to mock communion or degrade it. He's got some great lines and illustrations for things, like his benediction "Until that day, and may we always live today as if tomorrow were that day" and how he unknowingly explains the relationship between law and grace to Teri. I did like Teri's struggle with law and grace and legalism, but I do kinda wish it had been developed a little more fully. It isn't a struggle that gets resolved by dancing or not dancing or an analogy. I loved the scene at the beach where her mom and grandma told her she was in love with Gordon and she thought they were nuts and got mad. She says Gordon doesn't need her, and her mom says of course he doesn't, but he wants you! Go! And the end where he tells her he'll wait till it's a yes. I love stories like that! I thought the book was well written, and I enjoyed it. I've read it over and over now, and I'll probably read it some more. I only wish that Teri and Gordon didn't live in Hawaii so we can find out what happens to them in the rest of the series.
