Summary: Knight's finest work
Review: Dr. Knight has spent most of his life in these epistles and has produced a first-rate commentary in this excellent series. The introduction is thorough and Knight's arguments for Pauline authorship are convincing. The exegesis is careful and comprehensive, but the context is sometimes lost due to the seemingly incessant focus on word studies. Knight spends little time and effort on the background of the letters and some will be put off by the overtly reformed assumptions Knight takes to the text.

Over all, however, pastors and teachers will surely find this work to be indispensable for sermon/lesson prep. It is not easy reading; it is a very scholarly and detailed work on the Greek text. However, determined users will be able to plow their way through with great benefit. Mounce's commentary (WBC), is much easier due to the translated Greek, but it would be a mistake to neglect Knight.

My commentaries on the Pastorals include Mounce (WBC), Marshall (ICC), Johnson (Anchor), Fee (NIBC), Quinn (ECC and Anchor), and Knight (NIGTC). I am looking forward to adding Towner (NICNT) to the list someday!!

Summary: Excellent resource!
Review: This book is an excellent resource. As in all translations, some nuances are lost when translating from the original Greek to English. Knight does a great job of bringing these slight but important nuances to light. It is detail-oriented, going through all the posibilities, and explaining why or why not a certain word or phrase is translated a certain way. This book is a valuable work for the novice Bible student, the Bible school student, and even the seasoned pastor or professor.
