Summary: Hangman's Curse
Review: I suppose the readers of this review are wanting to hear details about this book and not me going on about how great it is. So, here it goes. The Springfield family (Nate, Sarah, Elijah, and Elisha)are part of a secret orginization that resolves strange crimes and upsets. They are assigned to a small high school in Baker, Washington to find out the reason for the strange illnesses of three popular student athletes. Elijah and Elisha are posing as students at the school while Nate poses as a janitor. They soon find the place literally crawling with problems. I especially liked it that the people who you least expect have something to do with the mystery. I would recommend this book to anyone 11and older. If you're younger than that, the story could be hard to follow.

Summary: The Hangman's Curse
Review: I love Frank Peretti's books. He somehow manages to combine suspence and christian values in a such a way that I can't stop reading once I start. The Hangman's curse was a great book. It stayed interesting througout the entire book. I never knew what was coming next. I also love it when he says, "Metal detectors may keep weapons out of schools ... but these will not keep out the pain, anger, and loneliness that cause a child to bring a weapon to school in the first place." I hope he writes more.

Summary: In between the adult and the children!
Review: I was excited to see that Frank Peretti was writing a series for young adults, as I have read both the Cooper family adventures and some of his adult novels. This novel is high on suspense (bordering on horror in some spots), and full of truth. His characters were a little weak, and the story progressed a little too convienently, but it is a series, so he has time to flesh out the Springfields and their Veritas project. This was a quick read, and I thought a nice blend of the suspense of the adult books, yet not too unnerving, and the close-knit family of the kids' books.

Summary: Hangman's Curse : The Veritas Project
Review: Frank has come full-circle and delivered a book that is compelling. This book can be read by young people and adults alike. Many young people will see themselves in the characters and champion the side of truth. Adults will be awakened from a sense that all is well within the system. This is one that you will not want to put down. I hope Frank keeps on track with sequels to The Veritas Project.

Summary: A different Peretti
Review: Well, this is the year for change. Grisham writes a novel with no lawyers and courtrooms, and Peretti writes a teen novel. Unfortunately, unlike Grisham (who puts out a novel every February, so we know we just have to wait until next year to see something new), Peretti's sporadic writing style leaves us to wonder when we'll ever see another novel from him. This book claims to be first in a series, so does that mean his adult readers just have to hang it up for a while? Please say it isn't so! To be fair, this book was good. The story wasn't as deep as his other works, but he wasn't aiming at the audience his other works had seen...this is going back to his "Cooper Kids" roots. It had an "X-Files" kind of quality to it throughout, and it could have easily been adapted into a much longer, more in-depth (and better) novel. The premise is good, and the final revelation of what's going on is worth the wait (Peretti never lets you down on the climax of one of his books). I'd recommend it to a young teenager, as the "moral of the story" (don't pick on those who are different from you) is a good one. Still, I hope Mr. Peretti's next novel is back to the adult standards of "The Visitation" or "This Present Darkness". Please don't forget about your adult readers, Mr. Peretti! We love to see your name in print too!

Summary: AESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME!!! READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!
Review: HANGMAN'S CURSE is Frank Peretti's well-developed commencement to The Veritas Project series, a commencement which introduces well the premise of the entire series: the adventures of the Springfield family, a family of four who is hired by a top-secret government agency to investigate supernatural occurences and discover the truth behind the mysteries they investigate. Veritas is the Latin word for truth. Although this novel introduces well a fascinating premise, there is a somewhat substantial lack of character development which is not typical of a Frank Peretti yarn. This lack of character development is the only aspect of this novel that makes the story a less-than-perfect beginning to the series. The fascinating premise and excellent storyline more than compensate for that lack of character development.
In HANGMAN'S CURSE, the Springfield family - Nate & Sarah and their two children, 16 year-old twins Elijah and Elisha (Alisha) - find themselves searching for the truth behind a haunted high school called Baker High in small-town Washington, a high school haunted by a deadly curse that plagues the athletic "jock" crowd - but no one else. As the Springfield family works undercover to find the answers behind this deadly phenomena, they soon learn that this curse is in the form of a ghost - the ghost of a student named Abel Frye who hung himself about seventy years ago. According to the school legend, Abel Frye ended his own life because of the torment inflicted on him by the bullying jock crowd, and now wanders the school grounds, seeking revenge on those stronger students who afflict the weaker ones.
Abel Frye thus becomes the patron saint of all those students who are afflicted by the stronger bullies. After managing to tap into the power behind the curse, one Ian Snyder forms a group of students who are outcasts, tormented or rejected by the jock crowd. This "goth" crowd places their trust in the power of Abel Frye's ghost to avenge them, and Ian Snyder possesses the power to control the ghost, commanding the curse of the hangman to fall on whomever he wishes.
As the story progresses, the Springfield family diligently persevere in the difficult and often dangerous task of resolving this mysterious crisis. Finally, the truth is discovered, but not in time to prevent the invasion of millions of a new, extremely deadly species of spider overrunning the school, released by the evil practiced by the inner workings of the goth crowd. When this invasion threatens one of their own, the Springfield family find themselves fighting more than they had ever fought before to resolve this deadly crisis once and for all . . .
All in all, HANGMAN'S CURSE is a highly suspenseful and spine-tingling story that is very well constructed, a story that blends well into the basic premise, which is a fascinating one, and which makes sequels a great thing to look forward to. Frank Peretti also weaves in a very thought-provoking underlying message that lies under the surface at first, and progressively rises above the surface a hits hard and clear by the end of the story. Through this story, Peretti tackles a very pivotal issue that unfortunately is prevalent in our society: the sorrow and remorse felt by young people who are rejected and/or tormented by peers.
The lack of substantial character development in this story is disappointing, coming as it is from such a master storyteller as Frank Peretti. I look forward to reading the second installment in The Veritas Project series. I hope that Peretti will put more effort into the next story in the area of character development than he did in this first installment. Otherwise, an excellent read. 4 stars.

Summary: Thrilling, Suspenseful, Creepy, and AWESOME!
Review: this was a really creepy, suspensful book. An average high school is suffering a mysterious outbreak of.......curses? When several of the school's most popular students end up in the hospital, crazed and muttering "Abel Frye, Abel Frye", the administration begins to wonder: are they on drugs, or being haunted by Abel Frye, the kid who hung himself in the school 60 years ago? Enter the Springfields, a family of undercover detectives with the Veritas project. As the 2 kids, Elisha and Elijah, begin searching, they discover a lot more than they bargained for. Is it a ghost? Or are the students being cursed by an underground witch coven? And what happens when Elisha is targeted? This book is excellent, and really suspensful. If you are looking for a great teen thriller, this is it!

Summary: fantasy or truth?
Review: in Hangmans Curse by Frank Peretti though this is a good book it is hard to tell whether this book has any truth in what it is teaching. i believe it is a good book to read but dont take everything you read in here so seriously. It talks about how these kids (Elijiah and Elisha)find their strength in God when really they find their strength in manipulating people. This book was a quick read and i would reccomend this if people want to hear both sides of stories but otherwise if your searching for truth (or veritas as this book calls it) you should look somewhere else.

Summary: Morals Meet Mystery
Review: I was glad to see this book because I was a big fan of "The Cooper Kids Adventures" --at least when Peretti had written the first 4. I've tried to read the second set of Cooper Kids Adventures & I think I'm just too old now. :) But Hangman's Curse succeeds in that respect: it's readable for anyone over the age of 13. I happen to agree with "opheliainlove", though: some characters feel way too typical (dare I say, Disney-ized?) But the dialogue btn Elisha and Elijah and their teachers is definitely worth the read. For those of us who remember evolution is *theory* and not *fact*, it's good to hear the kids debate philosophy with philosophy and science with science. However, I don't agree with opheliainlove that this should be shelved with Christian fiction, because that means opheliainlove has just missed one of the main points of the book. Kudos to Mr. Peretti on a well-written, exciting adventure!
