Summary: Ridiculous
Review: It seemed like the author was trying way too hard to make this book "deep" and "spiritual", but I found myself laughing the whole time. The characters were silly and unbelievable, and the part where James and Ninah got it on in the prayer room was crap--I didn't believe it for a second and still can't believe the author fed us this and so many people just ate it up. Come on, this was a cliched and stereotypical book that had absolutely no emotional impact on me whatsoever. The only thing this book made me think about was why just because Oprah recommends a book, people will read it and praise it, even if it is contrived and silly.

Summary: The Most Inspiring Book Ever
Review: I had to pick a book for a senior term paper and I had heard it was a modern Scarlet Letter. It started off not very interesting but then after I was done it was the best book I have ever read. You can't help getting sucked into it. This was the most compelling, inspiring, and awsome book. I recommend this book to everyone. I felt like a part of the story the whole time. It is amazing what you find out about religions and people after reading this novel.I hope that everyone can open their mind enough to read this.

Summary: Flannery O'Connor
Review: At first, I would have to say that I was impressed with this book. But upon looking back at all I have read, I realized that there is one true Giant of Southern fiction, of all fiction...Flannery O'Connor. If you liked this book, I urge you to run, not walk, to the nearest source of Flannery O'Connor. She is a dream come true.

Summary: Fabulous Writing
Review: This is without question one of the best books I have ever read. I was mesmerized by the characters and drawn into "Fire and Brimestone" myself. The descriptiveness was beatiful. You are left with the feeling that these people are involved in your life. It is the story of self discovery at its best.

Summary: An Incredible Deep-Reaching Book
Review: Ninah's life and story were inspirational. Although at times the events left me with sheer sadness and pity, the depth of the words was indescribable. Reynolds has successfully touched the heart in the places that question beliefs and religion. She has allowed the reader to see more clearly why it is that beliefs are held and what dear beliefs should be let go. I found the story incredible and the metaphors deep-reaching. I could not read this book fast enough and I am certain it is one that I will read again. If you have come to a place where you have decided that your religious past and all its teachings can no longer be grasped with belief, this is a book that will leave you touched in both a rational and emotional sense.

Summary: Just glad I didn't purchase it...
Review: I did not like this book at all. My friend lent it to me, and I am overjoyed by the fact that I didn't spend my money on it. There was much too much offensive (to me, at least) content in the book. I don't advise anyone 12 or younger to read this. I have read more graphicly detailed books, such as The Invisible Circus, by jenifer egan, which contained the "offensive" content, but still had a great deal of content. Rapture had zip content, if you ask me. Yes, the character sketches were excellent, the description was good, but the book lacked something special that makes a book worthy of excessive praise. It just didn't 'click' with me like other books, like Invisible Circus or The Oath by Frank Peretti did. Definitely not worth another read.

Summary: good read
Review: this was a pretty good book, it didn't really move me or anything, but I liked it a lot. it made me feel sorry for her and also made me want to stand up for myself and God more.

Summary: This book had me questioning if beliefs are brainwashing
Review: The Rapture of Canaan is a deep soul-searching book. If one is interested in reading this book they must approach with an unbiased view of what God is and each religions view of what God is and about. This book opens us up to a world in which fear is the foundation that holds this community together, so as not the miss the "rapture", yet in the end the one who experiences this rapture is the one who was condenmend before he was born, Canaan. He experiences the true meaning of rapture, which is, in my opinion the ability to experience life through his own personal freedom.

Summary: RAPTURE OF CANAAN IS AN AMAZING STORY!!!
Review: INITIALLY, WHEN I BEGAN READING IT I THOUGHT THE STORY WAS GOING TO BE CENTERED AROUND NINAH'S GRANDMOTHER, AND THEREFORE IT WOULD HOLD NO MEANING FOR ME, BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT RELATE TO ME. HOWEVER, I FOUND OUT THAT RAPTURE OF CANAAN TELLS AN INTRICATE STORY OF EVERY ADOLESCENT FEMALES TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD, AS WELL AS WOMANHOOD. IT TELLS A STORY OF AWAKENING,REALIZING WHO YOU ARE, AND CHALLENGING THE WORLD AROUND YOU.

NINAH HUFF'S ABILITY TO OVERCOME "GROUP THINK", AND USE HER KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD OUTSIDE HER RELIGION GIVES ME THE STRENGTH TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS HOPE FOR ALL OF US. I BELIEVE THAT IF A YOUNG FEMALE LIKE NINAH WAS ABLE TO CHALLENGE THE ADULTS, HER RELIGION, AND AUTHORITY, ADOLESCENTS TODAY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THE SAME.

I SEE MUCH OF MYSELF IN NINAH, THAT IS WHY THE BOOK HAD A POWEREFUL IMPACT ON ME. THOUGH I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED WHAT SHE HAS, I BELIEVE I HAVE TRAVELED HER MENTAL PATH. I HAVE OFTEN QUESTIONED THE QUALITY OF MY LIFE, AND THOSE AROUND, AND SO LIKE NINAH I HAVE HAD TO WRESTLE WITH AUTHORITY AS FAR AS FINDING MYSELF GOES.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE, ESPECIALLY ADOLESCENT MALES AND FEMALES, WHO HAVE EVER QUESTIONED THE LAWS OR RULES SET BY THEIR PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND FRIENDS. THIS BOOK IS POSITIVE IN EVERY WAY, AND DESERVES ALL THE ACCLAIM IT HAS RECIEVED.

Summary: Very Teachable Book
Review: I am a high school religion teacher and we are using Rapture of Canaan with our seniors. Rarely, if ever, in my seventeen years of teaching have so many seniors been engaged by a required book.
