Rating: Summary: An eye-opening exaggeration of religious dogma. Review: Could not put the book down. Read it in two days and grieved for two more that I couldn't experience more of Ninah's courageous push to find Light, Love and her own inner wisdom. The book is a profound "portrayal in extremes" of the rigidity of doctrine and how fear moves towards insanity and away from love. A powerful message for anyone on a spiritual path.
Rating: Summary: Page-turner! Loved reading about the crazy religion! Review: This book kept me engrossed for hours. I never imagined I'd be reading about religion, but it was written about in such an imaginative way! I wish it were a series!
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: I really enjoyed this book for one important reason. The character development was so interesting that I can feel for Ninah, the main character of the novel, and how dhe much have struggled to keep her personality strong, even in the worse situations. One can feel was childish she was in the bigining of the novel and how mature she developt by the time the middle of the novel and especially by the end of the story. Also this book is worth reading not because one is looking for a novel to read but because to understand the abuse of a child by her community.
Rating: Summary: makes you question and analyze your own beliefs Review: I was moved by the courage Ninah showed in questioning the things that were taught to her from birth. It would have been much easier to have kept the blinders on and followed along blindly. Or would it? She showed the courage it took to fight for her freedom and that of her child and others to follow.
Rating: Summary: Only because Oprah picked it. Review: I found little interesting or compelling within this book. Aside from Reynolds's final declaration of thanks for freedom and independence, I found most of the content offensive and appaling, not because it was blatently sexual or masocisitic, but because the story lacked origionality, the characters lacked depth, and the the narative lacked any kind of hook to keep me interested.
Rating: Summary: A slap in the face that is necessary and wonderful. Review: This was required reading for my sophomore English class. I thought the book was very well written and does give you a slap in the face. When you are reading about Ninah's community, you almost forget when this book is taking place. It's weird to read that she's going to K-Mart. And it makes you realize that there are religious sects like that in the real world, and it makes you think...maybe my life isn't *that* bad after all. Truthfully, this was a book about religious oppression that had nothing to do with religion. It had a nice plot, good description, and I didn't want to put it down until I had finished it.
Rating: Summary: Does brainwashing really happen? Review: Sheri Reynolds embraced the subject of total religious devotion and challenged conventional thinking in this novel. Living in a community where a religious organization similar to Fire and Brimstone exists the reali life interactions are dead on. Reynolds makes the reader wonder about what goes on behind closed doors.
Rating: Summary: Little strange, but good reading! Review: There were some times when I was confused at about the beginning, who was telling the stories, whether it was Ninah, her mother, or grandmother, Anyway, it was not particularly moving, but it was interesting throughout.
Rating: Summary: Mesmerizing Review: I had a difficult time putting this book down. It grabs you and won't let go!
Rating: Summary: Buy it! It kept me up until 2 in the morning! Review: Sheri Reynolds has written a wonderful book that keeps you reading nonstop until the end. Ninah is a great character, and I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a well-written novel.
