Rating: Summary: I couldn't put the book down Review: This was an excellent book. I liked it so much I was almost sad for it to end. I definitely recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Coulnd'nt stop reading until I was finished. Review: I purchased this book, and read this book on the same day. I could not put it down. I was so intrigued to learn what would happen next. I wasn't to kean on the dicipline issues, However, the community was a real tight knit loving happy place to live. When James died, I almost cried for Ninah, I was right into to novel, like I was there or something, I could see what happening I was sad when the novel came to the end, I wanted to learn more about how the communities lives carried on. I felt that Ninah was very strong and held her head high, and finally found the strength and courage and the sign she was looking for. Nice Choice Oprah!
Rating: Summary: Oprah, what is wrong with you??? Review: OK, Oprah, I have now plodded through about 4 of your book choice recommendations and I must say I'm worried about you. "Rapture..." is just another in a long line of depressing victimization books. This one, however, was award-winning in its use of contrived and imagined sadistic punishments in a religious cult group. I can't imagine anyone spending creative energy thinking up these unbelievably grotesque images. Further, I'm truly astounded that Oprah Winfrey actually promotes the selling of this nonsense. Is the author still alive after writing this bit of tripe....I would have had to blow my brains out.
Rating: Summary: the BEST Review: This is my favorite book! Ninah was the most honest and brave character I've ever read about. Reynolds has a hit with this book, although I'm not sure if I'd reccomend her other two novels.....
Rating: Summary: A Good Read But Scary Characters... Review: The book is only fiction but the characters are so real that what amazed me was the mental and physical damages caused by one man's fanatical obsession (Granpa Herman's)on an entire community. The scary part is that a few people still have that hold on others today. A very eye opening book..keep them coming...
Rating: Summary: A fascinating look into a strange religion! Review: Ninah, granddaughter of the preacher of the Church of Fire and Brimstone and God's Almighty Baptizing Wind, finds it extremely difficult to express her own ideas about life and love within the confines of her family's religious fanaticism. How she adapts to this environment yet expresses her individualism is revealed through Reynold's finely crafted novel which is truly engrossing, even scary at times. Reynold's story captures both the warmth and the chill of unquestioning religious devotion whose intent is love but which sometimes somes across as harsh and forbidding.
Rating: Summary: I don't regret picking it up... Review: ...but I can't say I'm haunted by it, either, now that I'm finished. I liken "The Rapture of Canaan" to a ho-hum, hackneyed forest with some GREAT trees. I couldn't buy Ninah's ability to fool herself, or her incredible naivete after being sexually awakened and already pregnant. Other than the four or five central characters, all the supporting characters might have been the same person. I hardly cared about anyone. Yet the author's use of the English language is brilliant. I would have put the book down but for the actual writing. As I said, some great trees in so-so forest. And is it just me, or are these Oprah Book club selections a guarantee you'll be depressed at least 75% of the time reading about the diseased, the dysfunctional, the disfigured and the dying? Lighten up, girlfriend ... at least once in a while!
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Enjoyable Review: I throughly enjoyed this book but when I finished it I couldn't help thinking there was something 'missing' in it. I guess I really wanted a happy ending for Ninah and Canaan.
Rating: Summary: Reynolds' tale is both beautiful and disturbing Review: Grandpa Herman's Church of Fire and Brimstone and God's Almighty Baptizing Wind is a frightening place, indeed. The plot and characters in this story are beautifully developed, providing the reader a good look at a cult-like religious community and its members.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book, I could not put it down! Review: This was one of the best books I've ever read. I was afraid it might focus too much on religion but its real focus is on community. The auther has a wonderful way of describing all the characters, especially "nanna", who makes me laugh through out the book. It was one of those books you hate to see finished.I highly recommend it.
