Rating: Summary: Excellant!!1 Review: Being a tennager myself, I found that I could relate to the kinds of emotions that Ninah was feeling during the novel. I also enjoyed this book because I felt myself getting angry when the characters were angry and felling happiness, and many other emotions as they were felt by the characters. I reccomend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: A very thought provoking, well written story. Review: I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I felt it was a quick read and remained interesting all the way through. I was very impressed with this author, she wrote so that I actually felt what Ninah was feeling. It also brought back some feelings from my own youth, being raised in a very strick church where you are scared into "believing". I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story.
Rating: Summary: This book touched me in ways i can't even explain. Review: I read this book last summer and have been searching for another that will touch me with the depth of this one. I cried and was filled with joy at the same time. It is very spiritual and gets you thinking.....at the same time a very interesting story. I loved it. I can't wait to read Sheri Reynolds newest book!
Rating: Summary: Makes You Think! Review: Read this book in one afternoon. I got so caught up in the story that I lost track of time. I was the walking dead the next day after staying up to 1 AM to finish this book. When I finally finished and went to sleep I lay there wishing there was more. I was so drawn in that I could have read all night long. Some people have left negative reviews on this book. I think you have to be willing to let your mind work to draw you in to this book. Some people are not willing to invest themselves in a book in that way. For those that are willing, it is a unforgetable book well worth the investment. It will take you hours to read but a part of it will stay with you forever. Isn't that all you can ask for in a book.
Rating: Summary: An awesome beach read Review: This is a great novel...not very challenging to read but is still entertaining. I recommend it for anyone going on a sunny vacation!
Rating: Summary: Contrived and depressing. Review: It must be Oprah's recommendation, and that alone, selling this book. If you want to read about the fanatically far-gone preying on the innocent, your newspaper's close at hand and less expensive. Ninah's naivete is unbelievable, and the story unoriginally reminiscent of O'Connor. I must echo the request of others: Oprah, please suggest something uplifting, filled with joy, inspiring to read.
Rating: Summary: A Great Reading Experience Review: I was urged to read The Rapture of Canaan by my Forensics coach during the 98-99 school year. After reading it to get a better understanding of Ninah, we used a section of the book for Forensics competitions. Competing with this piece has not only won many tournaments for me, but has also gathered the attention of the judges and peers that I have performed in front of. Ninah is too interesting of a character to pass up!
Rating: Summary: enRAPTURED by this novel Review: This story is held together by a courageous girl and the many different aspects of her life that weave together to form her problemed reality. Many of the conflicts that arise in a young girl's consciousness, such as sexuality, religion, family, truth, and ulitmately love, are surfaced in this very touching story. Although the images are often harsh, they are necessary to accurately portray the the thoughts and actions of a community under such strict, fundamentalist control. The ending came too soon!
Rating: Summary: The Book Had Its Moments,But Wasn't Worth What I Paid for It Review: I bought this book with basically no idea what was inside of it. I had very few expectations. Still, I managed to be disappointed. I enjoyed the ending; it made me laugh, but this is not worth buying the book. Most of the characters are slip-shod.
Rating: Summary: Rapture of Canaan is an excellent novel Review: I first read The Rapture of Canaan about a year at the suggestion of a teacher. I fell in love with it right away. I just finished rereading it, and it is such a good book. The part where Ninah and James are working on the chicken coop and Ninah says something about "why build up the foundation when the building is already standing?", is a metaphor to the relationship between Ninah and James. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially 17-20-somethings like myself. It is a beautiful story with unforgettable characters and happenings. Anyone interested in human relationships, religion, and even mob behavior (the church turns into a mob or even a cult of sorts) will find this story fascinating.
