Summary: One of the best Christian books on recovery from abuse
Review: As the husband of an incest survivor, a Christian, and a board member of a widely known non-profit organizations for survivors, I think I'm a pretty good judge of books on recovery. I've been reading about incest recovery for 25 years, but Door of Hope taught me new things. It combines sound biblical principles with sound counseling advice. The steps to recovery are 1)Face problem, 2)Recount incident, 3)Experience feelings, 4)Establish responsibility, 5)Trace problems/symptoms, 6)Observe and learn, 7)Confront abuser (She acknowledges this is not always advisable), 8)Acknowledge forgiveness, 9)Rebuild self-image & relationships, 10)Concern for others. Yes, she favors a Christian approach. Don't most writers have a bias toward an approach to healing they have found effective? No need for a warning on the cover--if Christianity offends you and you buy the book without glancing inside, just return the book for a refund. I saw nothing in this book that sounded intolerant of non-Christians or homosexuals. Naturally, the author affirms the biblical view that God intends sexual relations to be within marriage. But in case you don't agree with this position, she doesn't run it into the ground--her book is about how the unconditional love of God can heal one's hurts. Sorry about the sermon--I just don't think a certain other reviewer's comments were fair.

Summary: Excellent material for dealing with & understanding pain!
Review: Door of Hope is a great read for anyone dealing with or trying to understand the pain of molestation of any sort whether incest or otherwise. Easier reading than Wounded Heart by Allender altho his book is also very beneficial in understanding the challenges of this raging problem. Incredible insights can be gained thru "Door of Hope" - encourage everyone to read it to understand the challenges of a high number of society dealing with this terrible tragedy!

Review: fill with wisdom, direction, hope, and faith

I am grateful she wrote this book - it has helped me to be able to fight off a lot of the myths in the christian community and to not have the attitude or at least know the attitude that "I am past this" is not always accurate. We can be good buriers and stuffers when it comes to pain. Maybe it's time to heal?

Summary: an offensive book
Review: I bought this book based on other customer reviews. I was sorely disappointed and very offended. The author presents a clearly homophobic bias, even implying that one becomes homosexual due to abuse. This is outdated, stereotypical, hateful information. It seems that if abuse caused homosexuality, there would be lots more homosexuals. I was hoping for healing and instead found a "blame the victim" mentality. The author clearly presents christianity as the only way through this issue. If that appeals to you great, if not, do not waste your time. This book should come with a warning label that clearly states its christian/religious message. If anything I have written disturbs you, don't buy this book-there are other very good books available on this topic.

Summary: an offensive book
Review: Jan Frank has written an exceptional book to help lead women through their recovery process as they may move from victim to victor. This book contains a wonderful recovery model that should be a reading priority of any therapist with clients dealing with sexual abuse issues, yet the focus is practical and a source of understanding for any victim of abuse. I consider this a must reading if you or anyone close to you has experienced the pain of sexual abuse.

Summary: A solid work intended for mainstream Christians
Review: The author writes from personal experience and from her religious ethnocentric fundamental Christian viewpoint. She has appeared on the 700 Club, so if you identify with and watch that you will find this book very inspiring.

However, Christians who are not part of the mainstream will find her assumptions and explanations about Jesus, God, and certain scriptures irritating, annoying, and just plain wrong. I speak as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

I did not think the author was homophobic.

If you can ignore her religious assumptions you will find her book a positive experience. Forgiveness is possible even for child molestors. After all, if Jehovah God can forgive wicked King Manassah for his sins, which included the sacrifice of his children, a child molestor can be forgiven for the harm done to a victim.

Summary: Not what it says it is
Review: This author writes about HER healing but gives the impression it is about and for others. I think it is good for victims to find their way to healing and writing a book is often a helpful tool, however this author leads one to believe this book is about others, when it is really about herself. She dangles the stories of other people but uses them as a vehical to return the story to herself. I find that kind of "help" not helpful at all because it leaves much unfinished and becomes singular in it's purpose. Congratulations to the author for finding her voice but please be honest about the purpose of the book.

Review: This is by and far the best book I've seen on dealing with sexual abuse as well as other traumatic hurts in life. Through this, Jan was honest about her own healing process and was willing to make herself vulnerable in sharing. I'm so grateful for a resource written so openly from someone who's been there. I've read others that are informative but this contains an honesty and openness and is personal in a way that the others are not. This book has truly changed my life and continues to help me in the process of healing! Thanks Jan!!
