Rating: Summary: An interesting glimpse and makes me curious about more Review: "True Stories of the X-Amish....an interesting glimpse into a closed fragment of our society based on good intentions but laden with human frailty. It makes me curious about other attitudes, politicisms, and power-mongering inside the Amish church." J. A. Stokes
Rating: Summary: Nice quick read Review: Having visited Lancaster County, Pa I've been able to be in contact with the Amish. I have always wondered about them--about their traditions and their religious beliefs. I also wondered how many do defect, and join mainstream America. It was a pleasure when I came across this book through Amazon, and even so when I received it in the mail a couple of days later. Knowing what I know now about the Amish only makes me want to learn more about them. Although the book has many grammatical errors, the message gets across loud and clear. All who left the Amish left for different reasons, but one stands out---FREEDOM. I don't understand why the Amish think that theirs is the only true religion and everybody else on the face of the earth is condemned to eternal damnation. I wish I could find another book like this one where it talks about the "not so perfect world" of the Amish. This was a nice, quick read--not too deep, and not too shallow.
Rating: Summary: Very True, and I should know! Review: I am also from the Amish and the stories in this book rang very true to me. I worked in a capacity for a number of years where I heard such stories regularly. Well written and I congratulate Mr. Garrett for being willing to help these people tell their side of things. Thank you. Each story is a little different as are the people who shared them and I know it took courage to be able and willing to tell the truth. To many books are out there already which glamourize the Amish beyond anything that is true. Thank you for your time.
Rating: Summary: I Believe Review: I do believe what was stated in this book. I don't know for sure that I would have if I hadn't had a first hand explination about the Amish clan. That is what it seems like to me. The reason how I have 1st hand explinations is because my brother-in-law is X-Amish. I have sat and listened to them talk for hours about their live in there. He is from the Clark Missouri group. I never realized that there were so many people out there in the world that use to be Amish. A few friends of ours that are X-Amish also wrote a book about the Amish. There are about 10 different people in this book that tells their story of life in and how they finally left and the reason's why they choose to stay out here. With us English people. I have to agree with you totally.
Rating: Summary: Highly Disappointing Review: I found this book to be full of errors in grammar, spelling, typesetting and punctuation which made it very difficult and tedious to even finish. The reader will find every story to be almost exactly the same. The writing style is that of a junior high student. The narration at times abruptly jumps from third to first person which adds to the difficulty of following the stories. Add to this a highly repetitive, redundant style of writing... I am sorry I wasted my money on this.
Rating: Summary: True Stories of The X Amish Review: I think this book is an perfect buy for any one who wants to know why the Amish look perfect. This book shows even in a great community bad things still occur including sexual abuse.Any one who wants to know more about the Amish should read this book.
Rating: Summary: This book tells of the hardships of Amish women and children Review: I thought the book was very informative!I didn't really realize the hardships that the women and children had until I read the book. I had always heard, but I wasn't sure until I read True Stories of the X-Amish. I also liked the pictures so when I was reading I could look back and see what the chapter was about or was referring to. I have a hard time understanding how family can turn their backs on their families for choosing to leave the Amish life to try to better themselves. B. Coats
Rating: Summary: A Little Slow Review: I thought the stories were very similar and repetitive. It was an easy read though. I did learn a few new things.
Rating: Summary: Good Content But Not Presented Well Review: I was so excited to read this book when it came in the mail but I was disappointed when I started reading it. There are so many typos and grammar errors it was distracting. By the end of the book I was paying more attention to the errors I found on every page and less on the content of the stories. The stories are good and have great potential. They are maddening and eye-opening but I hoped they would have done more with it. To me, it reads more like a second draft not a final published copy. The copy is repetitive and unimaginative but the potential is there for some wonderful stories if they found an excellent editor to make it sing and make it a more interesting read. For what it is, I would recommend it but I would love to see them rewrite the narratives - then they would have an excellent book, not just a 'good' one.
Rating: Summary: Mostly Not True Review: Recently I bought this book, knowing the Amish very well, not to mention the head bishop. Some of the stuff in there was so false. I also let several of the amish read it, and the idea about bishops being picked by a mark in the book, I dont think so. And as far as the pictures go, the one taken in Munfordville KY hate to tell you thats not Munfordville, there is no "OLD order" amish in Munfordville. Sorry to give it the 1 star wouldnt give it that, but thats the lowest it goes. I can almost tell anything about the amish, and the amish girl im talking to, why she tells me things that is going to happen before they happen and even she said this book had no meaning, so before writing a book about something you have no idea, GET a idea first. Wish I had my money back reader
