Rating: Summary: Good Bible Interpretation Review: This book starts out kind of slow. If you know the Bible at all, like I do, you will get frustrated at first that the author doesn't use more imagination in delving into the lives of the Old Testament characters. However, his imagination grows as he gets further into the Old Testament, and finally, when he gets to Jesus, his imagination really takes flight. I have never seen Jesus presented in such a human way before. Often in church His divineness gets over-emphasized, so it was refreshing to see a possible human side to Him. Overall, this book is a great read.
Rating: Summary: The Book Of God - An Essential Blble Primer Review: Those of us who have managed to somehow discern for ourselves that Christian Faith is important to us, but have have for some reason been presented with one obstacle or another that discouraged our pursuit of the truths the Bible gives us, finally have been given a splendid point of entry to The Holy Bible. This book is is based on stories of the Bible, and will aquaint you very well with many key characters and developments which set The Church into the world to proclaim the gospel. I have 5 Bibles - all overwellming documents of themseleves. My stamina for reading scriptue was low. This book helped me bridge a wide gap between my grasp of the Bible and my commitment to live a Christian life. I feel much more at ease with approaching the Bible directly than ever before, and I'm genuinely excited about how the Holy Spirit will move me with the Lord's Word. Separate from that, this work stands as a great novel of immense entertainment for all who enjoy a riveting story of good versus evil.
Rating: Summary: Amazing job, but still not grabbing Review: Wangerin has done an amazing job at trying to convert Bible into a novel, and although overall the book was interesting, there were still some parts that too much reminded of boring textbook language and made me set the book down for a month.
Rating: Summary: Excellent study tool for new Christians Review: What I found especially helpful about this book was the flow of the story, especially when dealing with the Old Testament. While I have read the New Testament over and over, I have often been bogged down in the Old, and unable to make headway. This book stays very true to the actual Word, yet tells the stories with such passion, that I found a new understanding of the Old Testament and the principles taught there. Mr. Wangerin is an excellent storyteller, drawing word pictures with flair!

Rating: Summary: And I thought the bible was beyond me Review: When I saw this book in the library, the sub-title grabbed my attention - The Bible as a Novel. I have always hesitated picking up the bible as the reading is always so heavy. But novels - I love novels. Even so I left the book untouched for a couple of days - I suppose I was afraid I would be disappointed. Since I've started, I find it so difficult to put the book down. I can't believe I enjoy reading this so much. This book has helped me visualise all that I've read in the bible. And now, I am going to buy this book to keep and reread over and over again. I'm already thinking of giving this as a gift to several people who have not read the bible. This book will send them to their bibles if only to check the facts. I've found an almost perfect gift! Another thing, now I understand the characters and the social situations in the bible, I don't have such a problem explaining the bible to my kids.
