Rating: Summary: Inspiring. Review: I was truly inspired by this wonderful collection of stories. There have been martyrs all through history & this book highlights many of them. It made me stop and think about how lucky we are in America to practice any religion we want to. In many of these stories, Christians had to meet in underground churches, all the while knowing they could be found and sent to prison, beaten or even killed for their faith. The stories are rather sad and many of them brought tears to my eyes. It is easy to understand and a quick read. I just couldn't put it down. Please buy this book, you will truly be blessed.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing in its recordings, but still an average book Review: First off I should let it be known that unlike most of the other reviewers of this book, I am not a Christian, nor do I see myself becoming one any time soon. If it offends you that I don't follow Christianity as my religion or if you think it will be a determining factor in whether my review is satisfactory or not, skip my review and read everyone elses. This book was recommended to me only because of its nature and it being a "good read". I read it solely for the books historical content and the interest in the subject which it talks about.Written by Christian rock group dc Talk and the foundation called The Voice Of The Martyrs, "Jesus Freaks" chonricles and puts into one volume stories and tales of Christian martyrs dating back to the time of Christ's life, telling the stories of how many of them lost their lives, dignity, and pride because of their religious faith. Numerous well-known events are told across the span of the book, such as the death of Stephen, the first recorded martyr of Christianity, as well as the beheading of the Apostle Paul after his capture by Roman soldiers. However, the book does not stay only on the subject of those killed by the Romans almost 2000 years ago, and reminds the reader of the acts of persecution that have taken place most recently in the past century, citing such martyrs that were killed by the Nazi party in Germany during the 1940's, Russian soldiers executed by the Communists because of their faith, and entire churches massacred by the Korean government during the conflict between North and South Korea. More disturbing are the cases which have taken place in the 1980's and 1990's, particularly due to the nature and methods in which the martyrs were tortured and sometimes killed. "Jesus Freaks" can sometimes go into surprisingly intimate detail about such tortures as those who were crushed by steam rollers, beaten to death, or worse yet. But to name all the cruel ways of punishment would take the interest out of this book completely. Whether the reader is a Christian or not, the book ultimately achieves its goal of gaining sympathy for those who have sacrificed their lives for their beliefs and I am sure would give Christians a sense of pride. For those readers like myself who are not Christians, the book still has a sense of sympathy, but fortunately, is not like some other Christian works in which religion is rubbed in the readers face as a pressure to become a Christian. The book stays true to its purpose of gaining awareness of the martyrdom happening in the world and for the mostpart does not stray into preaching. Nonetheless, the stories of violent torture and death become quite a volume after the first couple dozen, and can sometimes become redundant. The most reason I would recommend to anyone for reading this would be for historical purposes more than anything else, much like literary "Foxes Book Of Martyrs".
Rating: Summary: An intense collection Review: A collection containing hundreds of accounts of Christians who have defended their faith to the greatest extreme. Their lives are encouraging and offer a great perspective on how little we suffer for our faith.
Rating: Summary: New Respect for Martyrs Review: This book was bought by my brother but he isn't really a reader so I soon borrowed it from him and have had it ever since. I have always said I'd be a martyr for my beliefs and martyr for Jesus, but this makes me think that it while it is the right choice it isn't an easy one as I previously said. Just some of the things that were done to those people, but in the end they were stronger than their attackers because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Rating: Summary: Freedom is Precious Review: I got this book as a birthday gift from my brother. I started reading it at once and it has captured my heart. It is a cry for believers and non-believers in the Christian religion. It shows that even today in the present Christians are being tortured for their faith. It will challenge even the strongest Christian. DC Talk writes this book skillfully. Putting us in the peoples' lives and what they are going through. The reader feels the pain of the person going through it. This book shows that people from the U.S. and other free countries should hold their freedom of religion closely. I have a question for you. Will you risk your life for God like these people did?
Rating: Summary: The Album Was Great, And So Is The Book Review: When we thought dc Talk couldn't get better, they did. Stories from around the world where Christians are not so welcome have their stories in one book. When you read this, you won't take being a Christian for granted. This is one of the best books I ever read. Whether you're a fan of dc Talk or not, this is not aboutr them, it's about the persecuted church. You definiteley won't regret buying it.
Rating: Summary: Mallowcups for the Jesus Freaks Review: I thought it was merely an updated version of Foxes Book of Martyrs, but I was wrong. Though it contains many such stories, it also contains stories of those who did not die, but suffered loss--physically, materially, or otherwise--for belief in Christ. The book is summed up for me in the words of a young Chinese girl who was tortured for her faith. She said, "I purified my heart of the fear of men, and I learned to see God." So many times this book rings of "Fear not." These Jesus Freaks learned that Jesus is there, and that fear is merely a curtain. This book could easily be used by families as a devotional tool. What better way to learn about devotion than from those devoted? Perhaps, in learning of the courage of those who died for Jesus, we who remain might take courage to live for him. Whoever said dying to self was a piece of cake.... Anyway, five stars for the Jesus Freaks. I'd share Mallowcups with them.

Rating: Summary: the JESUS FREAKS (here on earth) Review: This book is an awesome way to learn how many people loved Christ so much to actually die for him. I love the book, personally. It is so amazing to know that all these different people were/are christians. I bought this book at a christian book store, I think. It was so powerful, and sad at some points. A few times I wanted to cry, but.. I didn't. The first entery is the Columbine High School. That one was sad because it happened not too long ago. This book was/is AWESOME! So go get it! It's waiting for you. You'll like it, and it might inspire you. *signing off* :)
