Rating: Summary: Could you? Review: This book challenges our faith in a very real way. Not only does it ask "Can you die for Him?" but can you be brutally tortured for Him? Dying is easy compared to what martyrs endure in these stories. Don't read this book unless you are ready to face yourself.
Rating: Summary: Jesus Freak Here Review: I purchased this book mostly because the title caught my attention. I have found this book to be best for light reading as it consists of hundreds of christian martyr accounts. Although the book has many sad stories, I found it very uplifting to read the bravery of believers from hundreads of years ago to present day.
Rating: Summary: More than a Step of Faith Review: What would you do for Christ? Is He your Lord and Savior? This incredible book talks about the trials some Christians will go through to prove their loyalty to Jesus Christ. I am amazed at the strength of conviction that some Christians hold and the extent to which they will suffer in mind and body before reaching their personal limit. To some this suffering results in martyrdom. The compilation of stories are not just from a time when Jesus walked the earth and talked to people who would later become martyrs, but those people who have felt the power of Jesus today. Whether adult or child, there is one common thread in all of the stories within Jesus Freaks. This thread, as the name implies is Jesus Christ. The book will open your eyes to supernatural powers that will simply astound you. This book shows the lives of Christians whose faith was strong enough to withstand the ultimate challenge. For non-Christians who would like examples of strength of conviction of some Christians, they need only look to the examples in this book. The format of the book is such that it is easy to read and allows for reading short sections at a time. I believe with all of my heart that this book tells it like it is and foreshadows of the things to come.
Rating: Summary: A "must have" resource Review: As a youth pastor, I have countless books and resources I use to supplement my weekly messages. After the Bible, this is the most often used resource in my collection. There are stories that motivate, inspire and convict. There are facts and quotes that make you shake your head in awe of our freedoms as Americans in contrast to others' bondage. My youth have told me countless times how much they enjoy the excerpts I've shared from this book. We've even used it as a blueprint for dramas... I am getting the second volume too!
Rating: Summary: Makes you wonder Review: Reading the stories in this book makes me wonder if I would be willing to be a martyr for Christ.
Rating: Summary: Generally good book, but misses the mark on fairness. Review: I love to read about martyrs for Christ, but I became alarmed by the authors continued negative representation of those from Catholic and Orthodox faiths. Saints and sinners (and martyrs) can be found from any faith. It is hard to imagine how some of the obvious Catholic martyrs (Thomas More, John Foster, Fr. Miguel Pro, Edith Stein, Fr. Maximilian Kolbe and many, many more) were not included in a work of this sort.
Rating: Summary: A must read for Christian and Non-Christian alike Review: Many years ago, Foxe's Box of Martyrs outlined the horrific killing of Christians across the world. This book literally updates that book by bringing into close scrutiny the killing of people across the world for one reason. Their faith. This is a book of facts which is well documented and reminds us there are those whose bigotry is so extreme, that their only answer to those who disagree with them is to kill them. It is not a call to arms, it is a call to stand up and be heard for humanity's sake.
Rating: Summary: A mind opener Review: What I mean by the title of this review is that this book gave me such a deeper appriciation for the freedom I have in my country to worship Christ. It's amazing how much I take for granted. This is a really great book full of inspiring, individual stories of people who made ultimate sacrifices for their faith. I can't imagine the strength it would take to love someone who is torturing you. I hope I can have love and strength like that someday--Godbless.
Rating: Summary: Myths, lies, deception, misinformation and paranoia Review: From the opening where they use the lie Churches used to get converts after the Colobine shootings. To labeling all contries as enemies of the Church. This book shows Fundamentlist Christianity for what it is, a religion based on lies and deciption to gain converts. Rember the old saying when reading this book. "Faith is beliving what you know aint true." The lies in this book show that, it's as if Christianities real martyrs aren't enought they must also make up ones with unreasonable stories. So much for the love of god.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I received this book as a gift, and it really inspired me. If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31.) I have let two friends borrow it already, but the stories are touching and inspiring, and the country profiles on the back tell you how you can best pray for htem -- very helpful Even if you aren't a DC Talk fan (and tsk tsk if you aren't) this is a great book or gift
