Summary: Seeking Answers
Review: I'm not sure that I will get what it is I'm looking for from writing this review. Please forgive me if I seem selfish in my request. Though I find the information provided in the very first pages of this book very helpful, I would like to know if this information applies to none married men as well ? The reason I ask is .... I'm currently in a break-up with the woman I love of 3 years. I don't know if it is possible to regain her love and respect. I've been searching (aside from professional help)for reading material that will give me insight to my hopes and dreams to be with this woman. Is it possible. So far....this book is the closest I've come across in providing me with hope for a single man (49) that wants to start over with the ex-lover. Can anyone help point me in the right direction if this book is for the married man and woman only ?
Thank you.

Michael

Summary: Misses the Point/Falls Short
Review: Although Smalley offers many techniques for resolving superficial conflicts in a marriage he falls short....in that he never addresses the real issues in marriage-the heart. If you don't explore and understand what motivates a behavior simple technique will not help. A husband must follow Ephesians 5 to find true fulfillment in a marriage. Trying to control and fix your wife so she will give you what you want is not what God has called husbands to do. Smalley sees women as vending machines...you need only find the right currency and poof out comes the results you want.

God has called husbands to treat their wives as Christ treats the church in every way! To serve, to lay down his life for her....to love her first as Christ first loved us. Smalley simply offers techniques and ideas and even out-right manipulation in his salting technique to control and try to change his wife. This book focuses on how a husband can change his wife to get what he wants. That is a far cry from a focus on God's mandate...to treasure the wife of your youth...to treat her as you treat yourself. God wants us to focus on our hearts...the motivation of our own hearts. A much better and more biblical book on marriage is "DISCOVERING THE MIND OF A WOMAN."

Summary: Glad Someone Knows!
Review: As I read this book I could not stop weeping! Although it's to husbands, it touched such a deep core in me that even after years of reading it I'm still touched! I've recommended this book to many men & women whether married or considering marriage. Gary Smalley has made a powerful statement of the sacrifice a husband must learn to make in order to become the husband God is requiring him to be and what his wife really needs. After all these years I have yet to find it's equal!

Summary: a must
Review: Everyone with any intention of marriage must read this book.

Summary: Good starting point
Review: Fascinating thing to me is that so many people get into marriage (one of the greatest committments and challenges) without any preparation.

It's like Jesus' one of the parables about considering the cost. No man will succeed in building a house without sitting down and considering all the things that'll have to be done. Building a marriage is tougher then building a house - MUCH TOUGHER. So it is a good idea to be prepared for it by studying good books like this one, talking with different couples who've been married for quite a bit, reading research literature, and conforming to the life of premarital discipline.

I liked this book, because it was

1. Short and simple to read

2. Had a lot of useful information

3. Contains stories to which you can related

4. Five bucks is a good deal

Summary: Not bad... BUT...
Review: Gary Smalley must have been one of the largest jerks to walk the planet. Some of the things he did to his wife are on the border of unbelievable. His poor behavior has given him the theory that everything that is wrong in your marriage is YOUR (the man's) fault. Think I'm kidding? I'm not. He says that everything that is wrong in your marriage can be traced back to something you did/didn't do. While it is important to take responsibility for your actions, I think he has taken it too far.

Despite this shortcoming, there are quite a few good insights in the book. I would recommend it, but read it with an entire shaker of salt.

Summary: Best book for men on marriage in print!
Review: Gary Smally carefully explains not only what and how our wives think but also gives spcecific practical steps to grow a great marriage. I wish I'd read this book before we got married 12 years ago, it would have saved a lot of heartache!

Summary: Excellent for husbands trying to understand their wives!
Review: How can you get your wife more interested in sex? How can you get her to stop nagging? Why is she so emotional? What does she really want from you (the husband) anyways? How can you make your marriage wonderful? How can you get her to respect you? Even though the book is based on Christian principles it will work for you and improve your already wonderful marriage. And if you need help with your troubled marriage, then this is the book! WIVES: If you want your husband to understand you then get him this book! (Check out the companion book "For Better or for Best".) This is a must read for all those in love, engaged, or married. It will definitely improve your relationship with your spouse. It was written with many stories that couples can identify with, tips, and specific instructions on how to improve your marriage immediately.
