Summary: Desiring God
Review: This is the most life-changing book, Bible aside, I have ever read in my whole life. If you are only going to read one book in the next 10 years then I bet of you, read this book. It will ignite your passion for God and drive you to want to study The Bible. Best book ever written that was not divinely inspired by God.

Summary: WORDS OF MEN - NOT THAT FANTASTIC
Review: What we need is more Scripture, less personality cults and books about the Book. I have to question if God's own Word was up for review, how many of us would jump to give it a 5-star rating and be as passionate about it....

Summary: Should Be on Everyone's Top 10
Review: This book is groundbreaking. It is one of the freshest, most original books to come out on knowing and pursuing God in quite some time. It is a hefty read with hundreds of endnotes (which I wish he had done as footnotes to prevent keeping a finger in the back of the book at all times) and a large appendix, but work through, sweat and pray over it. It is an investment with massive returns. The only issue to remind readers of this book of is that joy is not the only valid motivation. There is a role for duty and responsibility to play in the Christian's life. But this is just the balance, Piper is addressing an area that has been under taught in the church.

In the realm of apprehending/knowing God, read this one and, J.I. Packer's Knowing God and A Quest for Godliness, A.W. Tozer's Pursuit of God, and Francis Schaeffer's True Spirituality. These books will thrill your sould and help you love God more passionately

Summary: What?!
Review: Is this true? That was what I asked myself the first time I read this book. Is he really saying what I think he's saying? I was blown away. This is one of the most profound books that I have ever read. The insight that John Piper shows into the very nature of God is amazing. He then applies that insight to how all Christians should live, truly glorifying God with their entire lives and finding their pleasure and fulfillment in living for Him. EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. It will shatter your existing faith, whatever you believe about God and your relationship with Him right now, and replace it with something incredible, unfathomable, and awe-inspiring. This is an amazing work that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to understand God and live as He desires.

Summary: A Respectful Disagreement
Review: John Piper has articulately laid out his theology of enjoying the pleasures of God, which follows the tradition of Jonathan Edwards. I cannot deny that Piper is a good writer nor that he is a phenomenal thinker. Nonetheless, neither of these things make his theology the best way to view scripture.

The problem I have with with Piper's theology expressed in this book is his unabashed proclamation of theological determinism. Piper's Calvinism is informed by a select group of scriptures and authors. The role of human freedom needs a place in theology and our relationship with God, and even in our enjoyment of God's pleasures. Piper does not leave enough room for this aspect. Even one of Piper's heroes, C. S. Lewis, believes that a flourishing relationship with God requires genuine free will.

I give Piper three stars for being a good writer and a consistent representative of his view. I also agree that we enjoy God's relationship in many of the ways he describes. Nonetheless I must respectfully disagree with major parts of his theology, and I would like to warn other readers to look out for this when they pick this book up.

Summary: The most life-changing book I have ever read
Review: The Bible aside, this is the most life-changing book that I have ever read. If I could bump it up to six stars, instead of five, I would! John Piper has done the Christian community a great service by focusing a Biblical lense on the whole concept of Christian motivation. And what he so eloquently reveals is that the key to it all is delight - not duty - because delight IS our duty! The concepts of "Christian Hedonism" are hammered out with iron-clad logic and lyrical prose. Piper is both a poet and a scholar and both his clear thinking and his deep feeling about a God-centered God who delights to be the delight of His people come through. His chapter on The Happiness of God is worth its weight in gold. His reflections on conversion are very helpful in our day of easy-believism and seeker-oriented evangelism that produces decisions, but not conversions. The reflections on worship are absolutely paradigm-shifting, and the application chapters on Scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering all provide a biblical compass to give direction to the hungry-hearted disciple. After reading this book three times, I am still getting help from it, and I recommend it whole-heartedly to all who dare risk considering "the meditations of a Christian Hedonist!"

Summary: I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Review: Piper brings out things in the Bible that I've known was there, but have not quite put it together. It challenges the views of worldly Christians, while focusing on the main reason we are here, to glorify God. I especially enjoyed the idea that we far too easily please ourselves by the things of this world and that ultimate pleasure comes from God. I would recommend this to anyone that wants something more out of life through our creator.

Summary: Life-transforming material for the growing Christian
Review: John Piper is completely annointed by God. His entire book is backed up 100% by biblical references. The thesis of the book is "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisified in Him." He urges every Christian to become a Christian Hedonist: one who seeks complete pleasure in the pursuit of knowing God. He discusses many Christian topics including missions, money, and suffering. If you read nothing else from this book, read the chapter on suffering! Dr. Piper, thank you. All glory be to God, our Father!

Summary: Piper at his best
Review: This book should be read by anyone who wants to explore the Christian faith or deepen their understanding of it. Piper's gift for merging logic with passion makes for great reading. Its message will change the way you see man's relationship to God in a liberating way. Its message is simple: The Christian life isn't meant to hinder and restrict but ultimately to yield satisfaction, boundless joy, and completion. This is the gospel shown gracefully through one of today's most compeling preachers.

Summary: Thought Provoking in todays Politcally Correct(misguided)
Review: This book brings the reality of todays living into how the scriptures meant us to be. Author used good reference to scripture for self interpretation. Best part is about marriage and what it really means for husband to be head of household. It was very good if you need marriage counseling from an independent christian source.
