Summary: Historical fiction that stirs the soul.
Review: I generally approach historical fiction with some degree of skepticism. As my online review of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" indicates, I am all-too-quick to dismiss historical fiction -- especially Christian historical fiction -- in favor of Scripture.

This is, by no means, to say that "The Robe" is on a level with Scripture. All I suggest is that "The Robe" is remarkable in its portrayal of the earliest Christian community. Like "Greatest Story Ever Told," this novel is inspiring and engrossing. The characters have depth, and one is pulled toward them and their physical, emotional, and spiritual struggles.

Much to my surprise, I'm giving "The Robe" a 5-star rating -- it was a wonderful surprise! (The movie version was a BIG disappointment, however -- READ THE BOOK)

Summary: Undoubtedly one of the greatest novels ever written!
Review: Other than the Bible itself, there is no other book that has moved me so. I truly believe this book to be inspired by God. It is wonderful in the way it makes Biblical figures such as Peter, and Steven come alive, allowing the reader to really get to know them personally. I recommend this book to everyone. Even if you're not a Christian, you will be deeply moved by the way that the death and resurrection of Jesus influenced a Roman soldier.

Summary: One of the most profound Christian fiction books...
Review: This book is truly a Christian classic. The creative liberties the author takes do not distract from the message of Christ or the manner in which he is depicted in the New Testament. On the contrary, reading this book allows one to look at Jesus in a new light and love him all the more.

Summary: this book is awesome
Review: We read this book in public school. I thought it was awesome because it gave great insight as to the importance of the Crucifixion. The novel was very well written and told from an interesting point of view. You need to read this book.

Summary: An absorbing novel about the very begininng of Christianity
Review: This is my all-time favorite novel. The story alone would be riveting, even if it were not based on Bilblical history. I highly recommend this story about Marcellus, a wealthy Roman soldier, who gives up his sword, his money, and nearly his heart to find out more about the man who wore The Robe. It paints a vivid, easy to visualize picture of Rome and the Holy Land just before the death of Christ and the years following, when the news of His resurection was spreading. See why many did not believe in Jesus until one of the men present at His crucifixion vouched that He indeed was dead, while others vouched that He indeed rose again. The story of Marcellus is an easy to read work of fiction, that could have believably occured.

Summary: This book had a great impact on me.
Review: The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas is an amazing historical fiction book. It left me completely in awe. I sat down one Sunday afternoon and could not put it down. It did not feel like a 500 page book! I will always remember the story of Marcellus Gallio and his slave Demetrius.

Summary: One of the most powerful books of our time.
Review: For the Christian reader during this time of Lent, this book clearly addresses the relationship of the crucifixion of Christ to each of our personal responses. The book traces the life of the Roman Tribune who was responsible for the actual crucifixion of Christ and the impact the Robe Christ was wearing has on the Tribune. It is beautifully descriptive of the places and events that occur and weaves the events documented in the scriptures into the things that happen to the Trubune, his family, his loyal slave and the people of Palestine. It is spiritually uplifting as the author developes the change in the Tribune as he comes to understand and believe that Christ does live and that the kingdom of peace and love is possible for all persons in spite of the horribly oppressive rule of the Roman empire.

Summary: This is an awesome book!
Review: I am a Christian, so this book really touched me deeply. I *highly* recommend it! It is really powerful and full of true, Christian principles. If you get over the fact that in the Bible the Robe doesn't really hold any "healing power", it is an incredible book! A must-read! I agree with one of the readers: the most powerful line is when Marcellus says: "I crucified Him." But haven't we all? Jesus died for ALL of our sins and he loved us so much that he was willing to die. I thank Him every day for that!!

Summary: Very enjoyable
Review: I enjoyed this book very much even though it was a bit slow in the beginning, and a bit hard to get into, but it turned into a marvelous drama.

I agree with the others that the robe couldn't have really have held any special healing powers, but I don't think that was what Douglas wanted to convey to the reader. It wasn't that the robe had powers it was that those who held the robe knew that the man who had last owned it was a great and wonderful man, and that's what drove their subconcious to belive that it could heal, while it really was themselves that were healing theirselves because they believed in him.

Summary: A masterpiece
Review: I agree with the other reviews--this book gave me a better idea of how the believers carried on their ministry after Jesus' death. Lloyd Douglas presents a theology in that rules out any claims of a non-existent God. The only flaw I found in the entire story was Douglas' idea that Jesus' robe, in and of itself, held healing powers.(although it does say in the Bible that a woman was healed of a painful disease when she touched Jesus' cloak) I encourage you to get this book--it brings the Bible new perspective and life.
