Summary: Interesting for history of the early Christian church
Review: The Robe is a narrative that focuses on the life and spiritual conversion of a young Roman soldier who is present at the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. The crucifixion is told through the eyes of this soldier, who cast lots and won Jesus' robe. The robe posesses a spiritual power that guides and protects its wearer through his journey. There is, regrettibly, a lack of actual thought-provoking substance in this book, whose characters and plot mostly predicable and motionless. What did intrigue me about this book, however, were the many interesting details of the history of the early Christian church and the attempts to suppress it. If this interests you, I would recommend The Robe if only for that reason.

Summary: A Most Intriguing Novel
Review: As soon as I read the description of the book, I knew I had to give this book a chance! From the first chapter, I was completely hooked and could not put the book down! Don't let it's length prevent you from reading it--once you get to the end, you'll be wishing it was longer.

Mr. Douglas really did a superb job with this work of art. The characters were extremely well-created, and are just as interesting as the complex and fascinating storyline that they are woven into.

I applaud Mr. Douglas for the long time he spent researching for this novel (thirty years). It is both historically and biblically accurate. I recommend this book to both Christians and non-Christians, and to anyone who is enthralled with the era of the Roman Empire.

If you like this book and are a history buff, I also recommend PONTIUS PILATE, written by Paul L. Maier.

Summary: The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas
Review: Lloyd C. Douglas' The Robe has become my favorite book. I came upon the book quite by accident a few years ago, and I have since read it 3 times. This book is not just a great religious novel, it is a great novel. Even if the reader is not a Christian, he/she will find it hard to put down. The reader is drawn in from the very first paragraph. Douglas certainly has a knowledge of ancient Rome and Judea, and he uses historical references to great effect. The characters are some of the most richly crafted I have ever read. The tale works on many levels: a love story; a tale of suspense; a tale of political intrigue; and, ultimately, a triumph of the human spirit and the power of personal redemption. For those without a clear view of Chritianity (which is easy to understand these days), this book is for you. While a novel, this book is probably a fairly accurate portrayal of the early Jesus movement in Judea and in Rome. This book should be on every bookshelf.

Summary: My favorite book!
Review: 'And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots' Matthew 27:35

One day in March, I was completely bored to death. My Grandma, tired of seeing me mope about, told me to get interested in a good book. Having no good books to read I told my Grandma to pick one out for me. She casually told me that The Robe was a good book and told me to find it off of the shelf that held all of her books that she got from The Peoples' Book Club. It had beautiful illustrations. I sat down to read it and from the first page I was immediately hooked.

That was in the year 1997. It is the year 2000 now and ever since then I have read The Robe 3 times and am in the middle of reading it again.

It is the most enduring story of Marcellus Gallio, a wealthy Tribune and son of a senator in ancient Rome. When he is ordered to put a man he knows is not guilty to death by crucifixion, he goes insane. Marcellus is accompanied in this story by the tragic Demetrius, his slave, and Diana, the woman he loves and a niece to the Emperor. Marcellus, after being healed, goes on a quest to learn of the mysterious man he put to death. And discoves he is not dead at all.

This book takes 508 pages to unfold. But it is told with such mesmerising characters and such keen historical detail that you wish it would never end.

Summary: Awe-inspring story
Review: I am an avid reader and cover at least three books a week--this was the best book I have ever read. The portrayal of the characters are realistic and three dimensional, there is never a dull moment in the plot, and the story was awe inspiring. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in understanding better the period during which Christ was living.

Summary: Hi to all who appreciate worthy literature!
Review: At first I must confess that i have not read the book, because it is not published in my country, but I have seen the movie and it was really enchanting. I encourage you to read this novel, it Must be good. such are also the books Quo Vadis, and Ben Hur, that I have read - if you have not, try! It's worth it! But I wanted also to ask a favor of you Christians. I live in a country where only for a few years the Christianity is not pursued anymore, and with Christian literature the situation is not good at all. Yet I would like to read famous books about God and His people, especially i appreciate good Christian fiction. Therefore I wanted to ask - if it is possible, please, send me some good book to read and take courage. It dos not matter if it is old or used, or dog eared:). I will be grateful fot any, any book to read. Thanks to you beforehand. If you think about helping me, please write to my email address - brr81@hotmail.com. I thank God for you all! Summary: How did Lloyd C. Douglas do it!
Review: Not your grade school level reading, this book is written, like Michael Angelo paints! Douglas has truly done his homework on this one, taking the reader back in time, as if he/she were living in the cypress studded hills of Rome. The true focus here is on the ever-developing character of Marcellus, the son of a wealthy senator (and the books main character). As he works his way through the political battlefield of the times, one can't help but wonder how the author mastered the detailed elements contained within this brilliant novel. In the end, the reader comes away both moved and humbled by the trials, tribulations, and subsequently noble characteristics, of a man so affected by the spiritual aura, of the Robe.

It would be nearly impossible for Hollywood to live up to this book, but if they ever make the movie right, it will surley be a blockbuster to inspire the masses!

Summary: A Fantastic Book
Review: Although I am not a Christian nor do I have much prior knowledge of the bible or any history on Christianity, I enjoyed this book very much. The story is very moving and after reading the book I was keen to find out more about the history and this book actually prompts me to flip through the bible.

Summary: Captivating, Couldn't put it down
Review: So often we only hear the version of this story that is written in the Bible. This is a very believable story of how observers to the crucifiction may have been effected. It follows the jorney of Jesus' robe and the lives it touches. It opened up a whole new side to this story. I found myself going back to read the biblical version of this story in a whole new light. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
