Summary: An excellent survey
Review: Although at times it reads like a high school textbook, this is an excellent survey of the Old Testament and ancient cultures. When I first encountered it, I had already studied a lot about the ancient world and the Old Testament and I still found this book to be a worthwhile read.I recommend this book for any Christian, or non-Christian, who is interested in learning about the Old Testament and how the Israelite culture fit in to the ancient world. There are plenty of pictures and trivia pieces to keep the book from reading like a long essay. After reading this, you'll gain so much appreciation for one simple fact: the New Testament is completely built upon the foundation of the Old Testament. And to learn the OT better is to know the NT better!

Summary: OT Text for GenX
Review: Encountering the OT This is an excellent text for a survey class in college or high school. Full of charts, pictures, and other layout features, it looks fluffy at first glance, but it covers all the major issues. Comes with a CD that has nicely presented summaries of the chapters, quizzes over the outline of the book/s, and a glossary of terms. One nice feature on the CD, along with the audio glossary (aids correct pronunciation of difficult words), is the video introduction to each book. Two complaints: first, the section on the minor prophets is far too brief to yield meaningful information or encourage retention. Second, the CD's quizzes could have been much more helpful and really made the CD a valuable addition. Hopefully, future additions will find both of the shortcomings remedied. Overall, this is a perfect textbook for Generation X.

Review: I have been priveledged to actually sit under the teaching of Dr. Beyer! This book was much of our course and I have never met anyone with as much love for the Old Testament as he. This book reads much like one of his classes, but with out the excitement that Dr. Beyer adds. If you ever get a chance, take a class by him and if not, at least get the book!

Summary: Wonderful Resource
Review: I have taken one of Dr. Beyer's classes. He is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the Old Testament. It is hard to listen to him speak and read what he writes without catching his enthusiasm. The Old Testament comes alive in new ways. I highly recommend this!

Review: I highly recommend "Encountering the Old Testament:A Christian Survey" to all those who desire to learn more and understand better God's message to humanity as revealed in the Old Testament Scriptures. It is one of the best Old Testament Survey Books available on the market today.

Summary: I hope this book excites students about THE book!
Review: Several years ago, when Baker Book House first conceived the idea of the Encountering Biblical Studies series, I never would have dreamed I would have the privilege of being a part of it. Now, Encountering the Old Testament has appeared--the result of a real team effort. The accompanying CD-ROM is a real plus, too, complete with the kind of interaction today's students really like. And who knows--they might even LEARN something! Co-authoring a book proved an interesting experience. Bill Arnold and I hail from different denominational backgrounds, so we worked together to express the key thoughts of each chapter in a non-sectarian way. We read each other's chapters and gave each other input before we sent the revised chapters to our editor at Baker Book House. A few chapters we had to send back and forth several times! But in the end, we hope the finished product is worth the effort. It's really exciting to see the book I've co-authored being used by students at Christian colleges and seminaries around the US and Canada. But most of all, we hope it gets those students excited about another book--the Bible, the book of books, the greatest book of all.

Review: This book is factual/informative like a text book but it reads very smoothly. Visual aids help the reader to remember what has been studied. This is an excellent book for ministers who are looking for a fresh source of Old Testament facts and it would also benefit a beginning Bible student.
