Summary: Reading more about Mitford because my book club wants me to!
Review: "High, Green Hills" is the second "Mitford" book I've read. While I find them entertaining and relaxing, I think my time would be better spent reading other things. I may read a third the next time I need to rest or am in the hospital. But, if my Book Club insists - that is what I will do.

Summary: Meet the people in the ideal American village
Review:

This is another fine book in Jan Karon's series on Mitford.

Mitford is a nice little North Carolina town, filled with nice people who interact with each other. The main character is an Episcopalian priest who loves his wife, and (believe it or not) believes what he preaches. Father Timothy Kavanaugh not only talks the talk, he walks the walk.

Don't look in this series for foul language, explicit sex, fast car chases or gruesome murders. Some of those stories are alright in their place, but this one is different. The nastiest word you'll find is "poop." But the story avoids being saccharin. The characterizations are excellent, the people live and breathe and their motivations are utterly real. Furthermore, the author demonstrates amazing insights into human nature. The tale was never boring to me.

This is the fourth book of Karon's I've read in this series, and I loved them all. The only fault I've found is that number six was published out-of-order, and should have been number two. But they all stand alone.

Try them, you'll like them.

Summary: Out to Canaan
Review: All five of the Mitford Books are GEMS. Jan Karon-we're looking anxiously for number six.

Summary: If there were 6 stars, any book in the series would get them
Review: All four books in the Mitford series were simply delightful! Seeing them in the bookstore, I bought them for my mother, but found myself engrossed after thefirst few pages and just couldn't quit! All of the characters are someone I know! What pleasant and peaceful (and charming!) reads all of these books are! Each one is a jewel! My mother is enjoying them now, and as she finishes each one, my teenage daughter is anxious to begin them!

Summary: A soothing escape
Review: All of Jan's Karon's novels epitomize escapism at it's best. Every time I finish one of her books, I am sorry and even a bit depressed at having to once again leave Mitford and it's charming, warm, and amusing residents. Start with At Home in Mitford, and enjoy this heartwarming series. You will wish that you lived in Mitford...and for a short while, you will feel as if you do.

Summary: Nostalgia for the soul and spirit yet so relevelant to 1997
Review: All of the books in this series, even the newest one, Out of Cannan, take me back to a time and a place that maybe only exsists in the human spirit - and memories. I look forward to new titles in this series as we follow the lives of those that appear to "be all together" and those that it seems nothing can happen "good" for. I love the human touch and spirit that in a world that we know is flawed, here is rural town Americana, that all of us visit from time to time Every age from 12-80 can read, reminiscent and enjoy this wonderful series. You will find as you visit with the varied personalities of this parish those that are in your "parish" wherever you are. Great gift books for pre-teens to teens for Christmas!

Summary: Life-Affirming and Wonderful
Review: As an cradle Episcopalian (a rara avis in and of itself) and a clergyman's daughter, I truly enjoyed reading not only this book, but all of the books in this series. I felt like I was home again, among people who speak my native language. I also appreciate the way Father Tim wears his religion like a comfortable sweatshirt -- you don't really notice it, but it pervades his life, and that of everyone with whom he comes in contact. So many books with a "churchy" theme tend to become "preachy" or over-bearing. A friend of mine (a fellow p.k.) bought me the first one, and when I had finished it, I was hooked! I bought the second one, and when the bookstore was closed for the holidays, checked the third and fourth ones out of the library to devour. I also bought the first one for my father for Christmas -- I know he will enjoy reading it as well (if my mother doesn't beat him to it).

Summary: Karon Is the Master of Series
Review: Author Jan Karon does all the deadly little care-taking duties required of those who write a series so well that even I rarely lost patience with a trudge through three volumes.

Even though I thought I had tired of the endearing souls in this book, I began to miss them after a week or two and thought I must write a review to apologize for my lack of enthusiasm.

Actually, other than noting my own personal shortcomings, I can think of only one negative thing to say about this book. The protagonist and his new wife lose themselves (rather stupidly but oh so humanly, I thought) in a cave and the protagonist spends some thoughtful moments--both in the cave and later--trying to discern what he had learned from the experience. The conclusion he came to seemed a bit contrived, as if it didn't follow naturally from the experience.

All in all, though, this is a warm and wonderful book and Karon is a first-rate writer. Delightful characters are hard to find these days, as hard to find as readers with long attention spans. If anyone can keep a reader riveted for three whole books, it may very well be Jan Karon.

Summary: They just keep getting better and better.
Review: Book three of the Mitford series finds Father Tim and Cynthia married at last. Many changes are in store for Father Tim as he adjusts to married life after six some odd years as a bachelor. In this book, Father Tim find himself chaperoning a camping trip with the church youth group. He also meets up with some unsavory characters from an area known as the Creek.

Summary: An idylic place to visit.
Review: I am just starting the fourth book in this series, "Out of Canaan" and I would agree with the people that say this isn't realistic. But we live with realism every day. It's kind of nice to take a vacation to such a peaceful place for only $12.00! I love this place.
