Rating: Summary: Best Ever!!! Review: A cursory look at this "New Living Translation" quickly proves this version of the Bible to be highly questionable and theologically unsound. It is obvious that this is another attempt to update the language in traditional languages to make it more meaningful and easier for a modern reader to digest. Sadly, this was done at the expense of maintaining connection to the original Hebrew/Greek that the texts were written in. Simply glancing through the books of Micah, Mathew and John show dangerously loose translations that offer more interpretation than translation. Without arguing the theology behind these interpretations, it is much more valid to translate and allow the reader to draw their own conclusions rather that to try and pass one perspective off as Holy Scripture. Unless one reads the "Note to Readers" at the beginning, one may not be aware that "The Living Bible" is a "...popular paraphrase of Scripture..." and not true scripture. The conservative nature of the editors (and the conservative slant of the paraphrase) becomes terribly obvious when skimming through the "Tyndale Bible Verse Finder" - which eagerly points out the conservative interpretations of topics like abortion, homosexuality, and sex. What troubles me is that people may read this "New Living Translation" and mistake it for God's word, when it fact, it is clearly what the editors would like people to think is God's word. If one has already decided that they agree with contemporary "conservative Christians" and would like to have their ideas reinforced, this book is completely appropriate. If one is looking to enter a dialog dealing with difficult issues facing ALL Christians, or if someone is interested in theological study, they would have to work hard to find a WORSE translation of the Bible. The King James Version in this book is find. P.S. I will respond to an honest theological discussion. Personal attacks will be ignored.

Rating: Summary: New Living Translation - A Missionary's view Review: Having lived overseas as a missionary for a good part of the past 20 years and having realized that God speaks in other languages besides English, it is a real treat to find an English version of the Bible that is written in the language that we use every day. The only cautions I have are: 1]- This Bible speaks real plain. It will probably touch some ares of your life that you have kept your conscience quiet on. You may need to make some changes! So if you are comfortable with your knowledge of God and your relationship with Him ... and don't want to be disturbed - this is not for you. 2]- Keep your King James Bible to compare. God Bless, James Yoder

Rating: Summary: This is the best Bible I've ever owned! Review: I like having the KJV and the NLT side-by-side! I get the understanding of Modern Day English along with the time tested Authorized Version and it really brings out LIGHT on many issues. I recommend this Bible to everyone who desires to do serious Bible study.
Rating: Summary: Best Ever!!! Review: The best of both worlds. The beauty of the Authorised Version with the accuracy and easy-comprehension of the NLT. The presentation is also nice; a royal purple cover with high-quality tan endpapers. Words of Christ are in red. A wonderful bible for educated persons who love the literary quality of the AV, but worry about inaccuracies or changes in language.
Rating: Summary: 1611 vs 1971 Review: The comaprison of the two texts on the page is wonderful. I believe the King James Version is the best for intensive bible study and The Living Bible is more readable and up-to-date in the language of our day.Check out the Love chapter I Corinthians 13:4-6 Living Bible "Love is vry patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices when truth wins out." I usually notice when others do me wrong....how about you?
Rating: Summary: We all need help Review: This bible is for those who want the original word (KJV) but want to be able to understand it (NLT). I would recommend this bible to anyone because we are all sinners and we all need help from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Study this bible so we can all become more in tune with GOD
Rating: Summary: Excellent Version; The Truth of God's Will Review: Unfortunately the ever present paranoia of authenticity within the different translations of the Holy Scriptures will not only prove erroneous, but self depriving of the fullness of God's grace. Seeking the most genuine and authentic translation of the Scriptures is an impossible task and certainly not what Holy Scriptures wants us to do regardless of translation. God's promise of the Holy Spirit to those who receive Jesus; leading us to ALL TRUTH is the ultimate protection against the error of human translation or interpretation. Christians not having faith in this infallible plan leave themselves at the mercy of such paranoia, and worse yet indirectly not trusting in God's sovereign power to lead us to the Truth if we are sincerely seeking it (Him). We must remember that it is God's will and power that is sovereign to "reveal" the truth, and not mere print in a book. The "paraphrasing" of Scriptures in the NLT is necessary for the times, and in no way radically alters the important doctrine set forth by previous translations, which we so dearly embrace as true Christians. The bottom line is that the NLT is an execellent source to develop one's relationship and understanding of their Creator, thus may we all continue to glory on with joy, love, peace and fulfillment in the name of Jesus Christ; Lord & Savior of all who believe. "Not by might nor by power, but by my SPIRIT, says the LORD ALMIGHTY." Zechariah 4:6
