Summary: So-So translation
Review: After reviewing what I consider more accurate, mainstream bibles like the NAB and the NJB (both Catholic though I am not), I have to say I am somewhat disappointed in the New Living Translation. In some areas it doesn't really deserve to be called a "translation" but rather, "a paraphrase."

It's good point is that it is easy to read and it's wording in a few places are beneficial. However, if you are looking for a translation that sticks as close to the original Hebrew/Greek text as possible, this is not it. I do keep it around for reference but when I want to be confident about what the original manuscripts actually say, you won't catch me pulling this one out.

Summary: Pleasantly surprised!
Review: Based on my view of the book referred to as the Living Bible (it was in fact neither living nor a Bible), I did not expect to approve of a translation carrying a variation of the same name. I was pleasantly surprised. The New Living Translation is an excellent version of the Bible and I often recommend to those who want a translation into simple, modern English. If the Contemporary English and Today's English/Good News translations appeal to you, then I would challenge you to look instead at the NLT. The translation is sound, the phrasing smooth and easily understood, and the language inclusive where appropriate. I would still place the New Revised Standard Version at the top of my list, but the New Living Translation is my second choice. I highly recommend it.

Summary: A Lot to Offer at a Low Price
Review: Dollar for Dollar, the New Living Translation (NLT) is probably the best and most intriguing type of Bible I've ever bought. I don't pretend it's my favorite Bible of all--because it isn't really a Bible, it's a paraphrase of the Bible as opposed to a true translation. But I really like it.

Of course, any translation of the Bible is going to be some sort of paraphrase, because different languages use different idioms that have to be rendered into English using different words. There are "strictly literal" bibles like the NASB that go for a word-for-word approach; most bibles are "literal" bibles like the New Revised Standard and New International, the latter in particular taking the "freedom to be idiomatic." ...

The physical presentation of this modestly-priced version is worth remarking on. For fake leather, it looks reasonably genuine, and there are other colors available besides the best-selling black. The type is quite small, but uses a blocky sort of Roman setting that makes reading as easy as possible, even the red letters. The pages are ordinary paper, not "onion-skin." About my only gripe is that the text is too close to the inner margin, but this tome (made in Mainland China) is well-stitched, not the sort of bindery to fall apart quickly upon heavy use.

For very little money I advise the avid Bible reader--or the Bible reader who finds passages in his/her favorite Bible a little hard to fathom (and who among us has not?)--or the just-plain curious to invest in this handsome, intelligent little paraphrase. If your experience is like mine, you'll be surprised at how likeable it is.

Summary: Easiest ever Bible to read and understand.
Review: Hello

This Bible is written in plain english for the layman. Anyone can read and understand the true meaning behind God's word through this translation. Pick up a copy and see. It is not filled with Thee's Thy's and Thou's just plain english. I highly recommend this edition.

Summary: Wonderful translation
Review: How many translations do we need? We need them all. This New Living Translation is a wonderful edition to my library of translations of the Word of God. It is written in such a way as to reach those readers who need a cleaner cut to an even more modern language. Great for gold mining or just plain nourishing grazing! This is sure to satisfy every pallet!

Summary: The NLT Bible
Review: I absolutely love this translation of the Bible. To clarify, a translator takes the original words from the original language and makes it make the most sense in the new language. There is nothing wrong with a thought by thought translation, rather than a word by word translation, such as the NIV. THis is a wonderful Bible for those just coming into the belief, or those who do not understand some passages in a Word by Word translation. It is relatively inexpensive, and it is a wonderful gift. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, and have bought several as gifts for friends and family.

Summary: Back to Basics
Review: I bought this Bible because it was inexpensive and I wanted to use it as a gift, but upon receiving and reviewing this Bible I was suprised that I got such a bargin. All my Christian life (20 years)I used the King James or the NKJ, but now I am reinforcing what the Word of God has to say with added clarity in the New Living Translation. This Bible is Red Lettered and it has popular memory verses amplified all through the Bible with a comment on their meaning. At the beginning of each book it has introductory notes, which is helpful. This is a very good Bible for the price and is worth giving to people who you come in contact with that are seeking an answer to life's problems.

Summary: NLT BIBLE SPEAKS TO THE HEART
Review: I love this translation. I have nothing against the other translations, and Christians can certainly choose the one they like. However, I don't believe in one being superior to another. God's word was meant to be understood by people. I got caught up in the King James Only movement, and tried hard to read it. I still believe it is great, but there were passages that totally confused me. THE NEW LIVING TRANSLATION IS SO CLEAR THAT I FEEL AS IF IT WERE TALKING TO ME!! I used to dread Bible reading, now I can't wait to open it up. I own several versions, but this is my favorite. It's clear and pretty accurate. I compare passages with those in my other translations. The differences are not significant, other than I can understand the NLT. Every Christian should own a NLT. Even if you prefer another translation (which is fine), the NLT can help clear up some of the more difficult passages found in the more literal Bibles.

Summary: Bought it to witness to a friend... got one for myself.
Review: I originally bought this to help witness to a friend who doesn't happen to own a bible, then after flipping through it for a few minutes, I decided I just had to have one for myself.

The NLT has been one of my favorite translations for a while, just behind the NASB (out of the 8 I physically own, and the dozens I have on CD's). And remember, it's a translation, not simply a paraphrase. It is a reliable translation that is easy to read. I find it interesting that some words it decides to give a more literal translation as well. Such as the word we often see translated as "gospel" is more often than not translated as "Good News."

To be fare though, I think there are times where it doesn't translate some verses, especially in prophets, deep enough. Simply because an analogy a prophet used is really difficult to understand unless one really chews on it for a while. But this is a rare exception, not the rule.

This particular print of this transtion is very useful. It has a very nice concordinance and dictionary in the back, as well as some key passages and verses that are highlighted throughout. The map in the back while decent, could probably be a little better.

Summary: A Nice Translation
Review: I started reading the New Living Translation while working through an upper level course on Greek exegesis. I was simply looking for a translation that was more focused on providing a sentence-by-sentence translation as opposed to a word-for-word translation (because I was required to do this type of translating for my assignments). I was pleasantly surprised with the NLT. It is a fairly impressive work, and makes for very smooth reading. The translation team also made the wise decision to translate the dates in the text into their modern equivalents. So, whereas previous translations might read that a certain event happened in, say, the twelfth year of a certain king, the NLT will (based on historical data) read that it happened in "586 BC" or "722 BC, on April 22nd." They have also done the same thing with other units of measure, involving currency, weight, and time. This makes the events seem much easier to relate to.
For these reasons (and others too) I think this is a really good version if you are looking for a translation that focuses more on the overall meaning of each sentence, and not each word.
