Rating: Summary: In the top 2 or 3 of English versions Review: Personally, I place the AB at #2 under my absolute favorite, the New King James Version (the KJV being 3, of course). When I look at my shelves of literally dozens of versions, I realize all I ever use or need are these three, with the AB being an indespensible secondary Bible and Bible reference tool. It truly does, "unlock hidden shades of meaning," as my copy says on its cover. Every Bible reader that desires to go deeper into understanding the Bible needs a copy in their arsenal, without question.
Rating: Summary: The most accurate translation out there . . . Review: The Amplified Bible claims to translate text from Hebrew and NT Greek with the fullest sense of each word, as it was understood to native readers. Being a NT Greek scholar, I have performed many translations from the original Greek texts of Luke, Paul, and others in the New Testament. I understood how hard it is to translate a certain word into English and impart the same connotations that are apparent to native speakers and readers. Naturally, the Amplified Bible's claim intrigued me, and I picked one up for an agreeable $15 to see if they were right. With what I have read so far (mostly Paul's letters), I am very pleased at how the Amplified Bible gets across those important nuances and meanings. They use parentheses around words or phrases that are carried with the original text, and they use brackets around words or phrases that would clarify the meaning of the original text. I am also very happy with the Amplified Bible's translations of the nuances too. They are comprehensive without being too academic - they are important and to the point.
Howevery, this may not be the best Bible for daily reading or use in small groups due to its literal translation. This is particularly felt in Paul's letters, where a simple, polished reading isn't there even in the original text. But it is essential as a second Bible for personal use, as well as with a Bible study or theological work. I almost regret taking NT Greek when I could buy this Bible ;-) , but it is definitely an advantage that every Christian should take.
Rating: Summary: Good idea, but awkward and amplifications often questionable Review: The Amplified Bible follows a rather unique translation principle. It claims to express "nuances" of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Now this idea does sound noble. There are many nuances of especially the Greek text that do not translate very easily into English. However, in trying to be so expressive, the Amplified can be very awkward to read. The extreme "amplification" of the word "blessed" in the Beatitudes demonstrates this problem. Each Beatitude begins, "Blessed-happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous [that is, with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation regardless of their outward circumstances]...." Reading nine such amplifications in a row is very tedious. But even more importantly, many of the Amplified Bible's "amplifications" are rather questionable. For instance, in Hebrews 1:4 in the Amplified, Jesus is said to have inherited "the glorious Name (title)." But Jesus' "glorious Name" is more likely merely a reference to His nature not just His title (see John 17:5). "Name" in Scripture often has this wider meaning. So the idea behind the Amplified Bible is good, but the readability and quality leaves something to be desired. I review the Amplified in further detail, along with many other Bible versions, in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.
Rating: Summary: A modern Bible for modern day readers! Review: The Amplified Bible is a must have for anyone doing bible study. One greek work can have 5 different meanings when translated into english but now that's not a problem. The Amplified Bible brings new life and understanding to once confusing verses. It also includes cross references to other relevent verses within the text--no more searching through footnotes! I've already worn out my paper back addition so this sturdy leather addition is a good thing too.
Rating: Summary: Provides excellent insight into the original text! Review: The Amplified Bible is certainly a 'Must' for every serious student of the Word of God. Especially when someone isn't fluent in the original languages of the Bible, the Amplified Bible will shed tremendous light on the original text. A great benefit of this Bible is the fact that it is a type of transliteration from the original manuscripts,...therefore, the Amplified Bible can be trusted as very accurate. The transliteration from the original manuscripts is as close as it can be in the English language. It also provides much help to the student of the Word who is interested in studying the original languages of the Bible some day. We've utilized the Amplified Bible since the early 80s, and we're certain that the purchase of this Bible is money well spent. Every reader of the Amplified Bible will be blessed by a deeper understanding of the Word of God as the Holy Spirit illuminates each book, each chapter and each verse.
Rating: Summary: very good bible Review: the amplified bible is just wonderful. probably because of the amplifications. its accurate and conveys a multiplicity nuances and marginal notes. bye
Rating: Summary: Very inspiring and helpful amplification Review: The Amplified Bible serves to amplify the meaning of complex words or phrases in the Bible. It is both refreshing and inspiring to read common passages of the Bible again using the Amplified Bible. For a sample of this commendable work, check out verse 11 of Chapter 3 of the book of Ecclesiastes. Eternity in men's hearts and minds is brilliantly amplified in parentheses as "a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy". In a world where everything under the sun is a vanity and a chasing after wind (Eccl. 1:14), what an enlightenment to see that only God can satisfy! This priceless amplification alone should be enough to get you to the stores for this Bible version.
Rating: Summary: God's Word will not return void. Review: The amplified Bible uses lanugage that is easy to understand compared to Ole English of the King James Bible. No matter how many times I read the Bible, or how many versions there is always more to learn about our Creator and the creation of His hand. One of the thinks I find so interesting is the things God said in His word about food are being reaffirmed daily. Because of learning disabilities the amplified Bible is easier to understand, with out loosing the true meaning of the Greek and Hebrew.
Rating: Summary: Too apologetic Review: The book has to many apologetic comments inserted into the text. I was hoping that it would just comment on what the underlying Hebrew or Greek words mean, not give me a theological slant to the text. Furthermore, some of the comments are downright questionable and make me question the translation of the underlying Hebrew or Greek.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Version of the Bible Review: The Old Testament was written in Hebrew ... the New Testament was written in Greek ... Jesus generally spoke in Aramaic ... The only way to procure an accurate understanding of the Holy Scriptures would be for you to become a master of, at least, these three languages ... or ... you could get a copy of the Amplified Bible, where all that has been taken care of. The Amplified Bible expounds on the meanings of various words with brakets [] that offer insights into what is being conveyed. These words in brakets become wonderful fodder for meditation! If you want to understand God's word, as it was originally intended, you can't do any better than this. Verily, I'm a musician ... I like things that are amplified. 8o) pax, Alan Horvath ...
