Summary: "Amplified" is the correct word for this translation
Review: I have always disliked the Amplified Bible. I thought it was tedious, and a general nuisance, and wound up returning every copy I ever bought, to try it, and try it again, wanting to like it. My final opinion was that it should have been allowed to go out of print years ago. Others (both clergy and lay) would insist on having one and urge me to do the same. "Ecch!" I would think......until I heard Joyce Meyer teaching from it one day. I thought I would try again. I bought myself a burgundy top-grain. It is still tedious, and a much longer read. It's an accurate translation, though, and formal equivalence. I recommend the Amplified with hesitation, because it is still a knock-down drag-out to read.

Summary: Simplified Bible
Review: I have invested a lot of money in Bibles. I was looking for one that broke down each section of the Bible where it could easily be understood. After reading and studying other Bibles, I chose The Amplified Bible. This Bible is easily understood and is comfortable. I think many will understand my use of the word comfortable. In religion I have found I understand more, want to study more, and learn more when I am comfortable with something. The words of the original Bible ae translated into contemporary language and is easily understood. I have not had this Bible very long and the pages no longer stick together. I easily find whatever I am looking for, and it is well used. I rate The Amplified Bible as top of the line--5 star.

Summary: For the Beginner or Bible Student
Review: I have used the Amplified Bible since the beginning of my Christian walk. As as new chiristian, I didn't have the Biblical background or any general knowledge of Bible things. The Ampilfied helped me to understand the different "shades of meaning" that are involved with the actual translation of the Word. It has helped me so much in daily walk. The Amplified Bible has opened many doors of understanding for me, I have used it almost daily for over 30 years.

Summary: Helps Unlock the Meaning of the Bible
Review: I highly recommend the Amplified translation of the Bible. As a seminary student who struggled through Hebrew this year, I know first-hand- the Amplified Bible remains the closest to the original languages. This translation is perfect for anyone wanting to study the Bible deeply, without the common errors and interpretational difficulties of some of the more popular translations. This one doesn't have the half page of footnotes at the bottom of the page like you may have come to expect with most Bibles. The Amplified just presents you with the text and you get to interpret it yourself, rather than relying on what the Bible translator wants you to think.

Summary: Great translation of the Bible for personal study
Review: I like the amplified version over other versions of the Bible because everything is explained in context. If the verse refers to other scripture, that scripture referance appears right there in parenthesis. Word meanings and background info is also right there in the text. This is the first translation I have read that prompted me to read through the whole Bible. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a more in-depth perspective or for someone having trouble reading more traditional text such as the KJV.

Summary: Favorite Bible
Review: I own numerous copies of the Bible and find myself choosing this one most often because its language and translation is most accessible. I would encourage anyone who is interested in owning a second (or third) etc Bible to purchase one.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great second or third Bible
Review: I thoroughly concur with the other reviewers that said this should be your second or third Bible version, not your first one. I use the New King James as my primary Bible version and NIV when I want a freer translation. The Amplified Bible fills in all the gaps. Anybody who is at all familiar with the process of translation knows that often it's very difficult to express a concept wrapped up in one word of one language into one word of another language. To fully express many single words from Greek, for example, can require 3, 4, 5 English words since there are nuances of meaning (and in some cases we are not 100% sure which one is applicable). (I don't mean to imply that any doctrines of Christianity are in doubt - they're not. The nuances are not that important. But they do give you a different flavor of some parts of the text.)

The reason most translators don't take those 3-5 words is that the resulting translation is almost unreadable. You need to read it very slowly, one phrase at a time. Most translations don't do this because they are aiming at both accuracy and readability. (I'm speaking of reliable translations here, not biased ones like "inclusive" versions or the "New World Translation" of the Jehovah's Witnesses.)

The Amplified Bible takes the other approach: fully list all possible nuances, and let the reader sort it out. As a result, the Amplified Bible is virtually impossible to read the way you would read a novel. But if you want to explore the nuances of one verse at a time, it's probably the next best thing to knowing the original languages.

The reviewer who said that we have too many Bible translations clearly has a King James only point of view. His intentions are excellent, of course, but his criticisms are off-base.
