Summary: A god like Greg Boyd: ignorant
Review: It is hard to imagine a more flawed book, especially regarding the nature of God. The God of Dr. Boyd is an ignoramus. In his words, "God can't foreknow the good or bad decisions of the people He creates until He creates these people and they, in turn, create their decisions" (p. 30). Even Arminians (who claim that God predestines those whom he foreknows will believe) would recoil in horror. Indeed, Boyd places himself outside of the entire tradition of Christianity (be that Roman Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, or Eastern Orthodox), a point Boyd gladly acknowledges: "this isn't the traditional Christian position." The reason the Church has never articulated -- or even entertained -- his novelty is simple: Scripture is peppered with the word "foreknow" (e.g. Romans 8:29). In order for Boyd position to be tenable, he needs to vitiate the meaning of "foreknow" and, in turn, vitiate the character of God and His Word. After all, how can a God incapable of knowing the future be able to predict the future; thus, all prophecies involving mankind are reduced to a wild night at the casino. We must hope, if Boyd is correct, that He can beat the house every time.

Buy this book if you want to hear the prattlings of a heretic. Otherwise read Defense of the Faith by Cornelius Van Til or Reason to Believe by R. C., Jr. Sproul; both affirm a truly omniscient and loving God.

Summary: Greg Boyd: Heretic
Review: I am astounded by the other reviews of this book, wherein it receives almost unconditional praise as a wonderful "Christian" book. It appears the reviewers did not read pages 30 and 31, wherein Mr. Boyd has the following to say: "God can't foreknow the good or bad decisions of the people He creates until He creates these people and they, in turn, create their decisions."

What exactly is left to "foreknow" at this point escapes me.

Let's be clear here, folks: Greg Boyd is here denying the orthodox doctrine of omniscience, which includes (among other things) the fact that God knows from all eternity not only everything that will be done but also everything that could be done. Boyd is at odds with literally every orthodox theologian in the history of the church over this (note that this is "orthodoxy" with a small "o"; I'm not talking about Eastern Orthodoxy, which I suspect would also reject Boyd's formulation).

Even worse, he doesn't even seem to understand the position that he is rejecting on these pages. He says that both his view and the "traditional" one (good word choice there; it's far safer for him to claim to differ from a "traditional" view than from THE orthodox one) "deny that God has a knowledge of the world which is independent of the actual world."

WRONG. Emphatically, categorically FALSE. The orthodox view does NOT hold that God's omniscience is dependent upon the existence of the actual world, because it holds that God knew everything that would ever happen from BEFORE the time that he even created the world!! Boyd is either ignorant or plain dishonest when he says that the orthodox view agrees with him on this. I can only assume that, since he is a Ph.D, he knows the facts -- and therefore is being dishonest.

In these two pages Boyd dismantles the Christian doctrine of God. It's plain for all to see. Do not be deceived by his use of language, and DON'T bother buying this book (thereby enriching him for publishing heresy). If you want to see it, go look at it in a bookstore or check it out from a library.

Boyd's viewpoint on this is evil. I call on him to repent of it and to return to the orthodox faith of Christ.

Summary: Incredible book on answering difficult religious questions!
Review: Our Church reviewed and then used this book for our entire summer, adult suday school program, this year. It was a smashing success with rave reviews from everyone who attended. I cannot rate this book high enough for both evangelistic work and discipling work. I have purchased and given away at least twenty of these books so far.

Summary: Excellent for those who are struggling with questions.
Review: This book is an excellent expose of "everyday" personal evangelism: from the heart and to the heart. A great compilation of answers and reasons to believe that Jesus Christ is first and foremost our personal savior. An excellent book to give to friends and family "on the verge."

Summary: Boyds talk honestly and cover the points most challenged
Review: There are few writers who can present appologetics in such a way as to cover many many topics in 150 pages and still leave me feeling that each has been covered well. Greg Boyd is a defender of the faith who didn't lose me in rhetoric.

Summary: A Smart, Solid, Thorough Introduction to Christianity
Review: This gem was one of the books which helped me tremendously when I was struggling with the question whether Christianity is true or not. It did not only answer some of my difficult questions but it also made me see how many of those questions had been pure misunderstandings! Even those who are immune to "Christian slang" (like I used to be) will understand Boyd's answers. This book may not convince the hardened skeptic but it is definitely worth reading and valuable for those laypersons who are open-minded enough to consider the claims of Christianity and willing to rearrange their own worldview when they hear the call of the Truth.

Summary: Excellent Must Have Good For Friends Who Aren't Convinced
Review: Great book! I have bought about 10 copies for various friends and family. I have loaned out the one from my library. It's all the common questions that people ask who don't believe, but the questions that are difficult to answer. These are the questions that we all get stumped by from time to time. Rock solid theology.Buy this book if you want to have answers to tough questions.
