Rating: Summary: Meditations Review: These daily meditations were comforting to read. It helps to know that it is OK to take time to grieve and to enjoy the simple things, the moments of happiness that can help us get through one day at a time.
I also recommend another book that has helped me a great deal.
Write from Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal. I am able to write about my memories, experiences and to find comfort in some of the healing activities in the journal.
Rating: Summary: Tiny shafts of light in the darkness... Review: "Healing After Loss" was given to me after the sudden and unexpected death of our 14 year old son in March. The loss is so terrible and unimagined. We have struggled to go through each day without our only child, our wonderful son. The friend who gave me the book had lost both her parents and her maternal grandparents within a 10 year span. She actually brought over her own dog-eared copy saying that I needed it now and she didn't have time to get a new one. Since then I have ordered my own as well as copies for my parents, Aunts and Uncles and friends. This book has incredibly insight, hope, understanding and some new ideas delivered in small doses (the tiny shafts of light in the darkness). Since concentration levels are so affected during grieving, the one page entries are easy to read or skip, if you need a one that will more fit your moment. With grief, at least for me, it seems like my mood and outlook can change so much within a couple days - this book fills many needs. Although my husband hasn't read it like I have, I will now and again give him a page to read that is particularly insightful for us at that moment and it can, however briefly, help him as well. At first I read what ever I turned to when I opened it, then I read all the dates that were significant to me, now I am reading it like a daily diary. Last week I was talking to my friend, she has a copy, and although she listened she didn't feel she had an answer for me. Later, she called back giving me a page in the book to read - it was so completely accurate for that moment and feeling - I felt a bit of strength after reading the page. I cannot say enough about the author and her grace, strength and ability to comfort. She wrote another very small book called "I Will Not Leave You Desolate" that I would recommend as well. If you are purchasing this for yourself, I am so sorry for your loss - I know something of the dark, sad and surreal world that appears without the one you loved. I hope this book can be of some comfort to you as it was for me. Of course this is only one tiny shaft of light in the darkness, but I am grateful for each one. If you are getting it for a friend or family member, bless you and your efforts to be there.
Rating: Summary: This is the book to give... Review: Above all the other books on grief, this little book is the one that I readily take with me as a gift when someone I know has experienced the death of a loved one.I respond to emails from others in grief. (note email address change).
Rating: Summary: Thank you Ms. Hickman, for getting us through this... Review: After the shocking death of my father, I was so lucky to come across this book, and also sent one to my mother. I wish I could personally thank Ms. Hickman for saving us by writing this book. It has helped tremendously and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. It is the first thing I pick up every morning and it literally enables me to start each day with a comforting thought. Thank you, Ms. Hickman. I am so sorry that tragedy had to trigger this blessing. I hope you have found peace.

No matter what the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one, the author relates to the core of grief and the myriad of emotions one experiences. This book give you permission not only to "feel" but also to take as much time as you need to go through the process. It offers hope and encourages you to believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. Rating: Summary: comforting, short daily quotes, passages, and summary Review: I didn't expect a grieving book to be so comforting...just like I didn't expect my Dad to die suddenly of a heart attack at 58. My Mom and I found this book and bought it for everyone in our family. It is amazing how the topics are similar to what you are recently feeling. I read out loud to my Dad in the morning to give me energy and to keep him close. (Ladies - do this *before* you put on makeup.) Our family will talk about a daily quote and how we relate to them. It helps sharing our stories and feelings through this pit in your heart time. Unfortunately, due to their sudden loss, I have given this to family friends. But they have told me it has helped. My Mom gave it to her pastor and to the rescue chaplan so they can pass it onto others in need. This book can help you through this unthinkable time.
Rating: Summary: A light in a dark tunnel. Review: I lost my 21 year old cousin in a car accident last year. She was like my younger sister in my heart. It has been a very tragic and trying year for my entire family. This book has helped to give me some light in what has appeared to be a very long and dark tunnel. I have also purchased the book for my aunt, she lost her only child in this accident. I greatly recommend this book to anyone who has lost a loved one and needs help in getting through the tough times. The author truly feels what she is expressing in the pages of this book and does a great service to all she is helping by sharing her own loss with us.
Rating: Summary: The only book that gives hope... Review: I lost my 7-year-old daughter Kelsey to cancer in July 1996. Martha's book was the only book that gave me hope for a better tomorrow. I read my daily passages every night before I closed my eyes to sleep so that instead of seeing my daughter dying, I could remember something wonderful about her and have some hope to hang on to about my future here on earth without her. I have sent out many of her books to other parents who have lost a child to cancer, and our local support group for parents of kids with cancer (Rocky Mountain Candlelighters) gives every newly bereaved family Martha's book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who has lost a loved one. Give this instead of a meal or flowers -- it will help much longer than those things. Thank you, Martha -- you have touched more lives than you'll ever know...
Rating: Summary: Comforting Review: I lost my cousin on 9/11. A friend sent me this book and at first I was hesitant to read it - thinking all grief books are the same. But once I started reading this wonderful book, it has become my favorite.I have started reading it again and still find comfort in it.
