Rating: Summary: For those who need to be reminded. Review: I have made a rule of thumb when picking books to only buy it if the author uses actual Bible references when making a point. This litmus test filters out worldly thinking and shows the author's ability to apply God's word. Brennan definately does this in this book. I had the privelage of hearing Brennan at my collage and he alone with Becky Tirabassi are the only two speakers I recall from the four years being there. I agree with the comment that the "flow" could have been better. I gave it away to a Mormon and she said she would read it!! Praise God!!
Rating: Summary: Encouraging and uplifting Lenten reading Review: In course of reading as a plan to "add" something to my life, rather than "giving up for Lent," came across this courtesy of a good friend. Excellent reading for those who inclined to feel "good works" will get them into Heaven! Not heavy, very easy reading, anecdotal. I'm ordering my own copy now.
Rating: Summary: cuts thru all man's junk, and goes straight for the heart Review: absolutely without a doubt the most valuable book i have ever read or owned next to the Bible. Every Bible publisher should include this book with it. not including my Bible, this is the one book i will never be without again. i have read it, passed it on, and intend to buy another one, read it, pass it on, buy another one, etc. if i could, i would buy a copy for every human being and pay them to read it!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Manning learns from experience the reality of God's Grace Review: While one can study the Scriptures and understand the meaning of grace, Manning personalizes God's grace through his own struggles and failures. This book's effectiveness comes from Brennan's experiences. He truly understood the depth of God's grace when he had nothing else to lean on. The immensity of God's grace becomes clearer as the reality of our depravity is exposed. Grace is just another theological topic for those live the Christian life in a self-righteous, performance-driven mode. Grace becomes HUGE for those who have gotten in touch with their inner depravity. The only thing I would have like to have seen is more organization and/or flow to the book. This is minor and probably more of a preference of mine. I recommend this book to all who struggle coming to grips with the fact that God loves them freely.
Rating: Summary: Brennan's words pierce my heart with love and grace. Review: Very few Christian writers today can so profoundly captivate a reader with God's timeless truths of love and grace. His brutal honesty about his imperfections makes me willing to admit mine. I've read this book numerous times; each time I am propelled back into the arms of my Father who is tender and compassionate. This is quite contrary to numerous books that give us legalistic do's and don'ts that men/women themselves have imposed on Christ followers.
Rating: Summary: Remembering the "Furious" Love of God Review: I have been a Christian for 17 years, and throughout all that time I have often forgotten how much God really loves me. Even though John 3:16 ("For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son....") is always being quoted in churches;or flashed at football games,I forgot. Thank you, Brennan Manning, for reminding me its not what I can or can't do, its what Jesus, the one and only Messiah, has done. A note here: Don't expect Manning's book to bring straight out conviction of sin from others. Most likely, you will be convicted of your own unwillingness to love the "outcast",the "poor in spirit", or the "least of these". This is one book where you are reminded that Jesus loves on and comforts us when we are in our most unloveable state. When He ate with publicans, prostitutes, etc., I do not believe it was a round table discussion about how bad they were. He loved on them, and personal conviction came later. When He dined with sinners, He dined with us.
Rating: Summary: Exposes our limited understanding of infinite grace... Review: Easily the best book I've read. Manning offers a picture of God's goodness and grace that borders on "foolishness." Those who consider themselves wise will be shamed. I found the book on a shelf, having never heard of it before, and bought it the same day. It is a nourishing read that only the numb can put down.
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life! Review: Manning delves into what it really means to be Christian. He breaks down in laypersons' terms what G. K. Chesterton called, "The Furious Love of God". If you're a Christian...especially if you have been trapped by rules, "shoulds & shouldn'ts" or self-loathing...this book is one I dare you to read. It's not a feel-good, "Jesus & me" mountaintop book. It's a life-changer. Read it, get it, share it with others.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book for those needing reassurance of God's love Review: What an amazing book! I am reading it for the second time, and will read it as many times as it takes for the truth of God's deep love for me to sink in. It taught me that although facing the truth that one is a ragamuffin can be very difficult, it is vital. This book is a true awakening. In every chapter, indeed in every passage, is material for reflection and prayer. It's good to know--and finally begin to really believe--that one doesn't have to pretend to be better than they are when they come before God. Wonderful book!!!!
Rating: Summary: Perfect Love exposed! Review: This gutsy book is the best thing I have ever read about the relentless Love of God! Manning does not hedge in his testimony of the Father of us all, who Loves us whether we believe in Him or not. A must read for anyone who has been told, "God is love but He is also just." I came away seeing that Jesus died to show us that love and justice are one and the same. That God is not dependent upon us to accept Him, but will chase us down with unlimited persistence! What a joy to see in print what the Spirit is telling our hearts, but we are afraid to accept. Brennan Manning, I thank you for this great work!
