Rating: Summary: A vital book for new and old Christians, women AND men Review: FOCUS,RENEWAL,MAINTENANCE...BALANCE. When I first read this book, I was expecting her to tell me how to continue trying to do it all. Tell me how to do more in 24 ours AND be happy, not worried or critical of myself and others. Instead of telling how to do MORE, it's about doing less. It's about focusing on the primary things in a Christian's life: genuine time with God. Ok, I need to do that, WHEN I get the other things checked off of my to do list. The author reminds us that God should be the first person we speak to in the morning regardless of our titles or responsibilities. Unlike other books for busy parents, it does not psychoanalize us or justify how our past made us like this. Those books seem to keep me on the pity potty. This book is different. Get up. Wipe your tears, rather let Jesus do it via contact with him through prayer and reading the Bible. It's about pruning our lives. Giving up what causes us to be in a rat race or at least cleansing our perspective of SUCCESS. Simplify, slow down, meditate, read, and obey are overall themes that resonate in my mind and heart. Thanks you Joanna Weaver for writing this.
Rating: Summary: A Unique and In Depth Look at Martha and Mary Review: For all of us who continually find ourselves in Martha's shoes, this book is a great resource and study guide! The author's writing is very unique and clever. She takes less than 10 verses and expands them into a book rich with ways to become a little less like Martha and a little more like Mary. I suggest going through this book with a discipleship partner to make it even more enriching. The study guide in the back is complimentary, but I enjoy just a little bit more on the studying part. There are memory verses throughout and self-reflection guides as well. However, the study guide is extremely easy to fit into a tight schedule! (: Enjoy
Rating: Summary: God can change your life through this book. Review: I am so thankful to Joanna Weaver for this book. She fills it with her own experience -- many years of it -- and speaks so personally and poignantly that I felt I was having a heart-to-heart conversation with her. I felt God was speaking to me through the book as well. Joanna addresses what might be the single biggest problem for Christian women today: How in the world do we find the TIME for our walk with God? She very clearly explains both the how and the why, illustrating her points with plenty of examples from the Bible and her own life. I ended up thinking, how in the world can I NOT make time for God? When I make God my center, everything else can swirl around me (like hula hoops) and stay balanced. Her book is changing the way I approach my walk, helping me to make time for my devotions on a daily basis. She's also helped me to understand exactly what to do in that devotion time -- how to study the bible and have a conversation with God (not a monologue to God). The book is wonderfully written and is hard to put down. Thank you, Joanna, for your service to God and to all of us through this book!
Rating: Summary: Closeminded Piece of Crap Review: I can't believe anyone would write a book this closeminded and rude! I mean, how, how could a person write in a way which totally shuns non Christians as if they were yesterdays garbage. Well I think this book is like yesterdays garbage! It sucks! Save yourself some time and money: never read this book!
Rating: Summary: Loved it Review: I especially liked the chapter on Worry and ANxiety. Need to read it again. I bought it for all the "church lady/Martha" helpers at my wedding reception in June (Bless Them!) and they are liking it, too.
Rating: Summary: Putting Martha in Time Out Review: I go and blow and do and do for others until I drive myself sick and then grow so resentful that I could burst. It is in my soul and will forever be in my spirit to head up the chore and taxi cab service in my household. I want to give and be appreciated -- that's all...just simply appreciated with a thank you ever so often. Is this so much to ask for? In Bible Study, I seem to hurry through just to see if I can achieve one more task, like adding one more notch in a bed post of roping the best bull (if I were a guy). To be silent and stay calm while meeting with and listening to - God - would be awesome. I love this book and have actually completed it feeling less hurried and more relaxed knowing that if I let go of wordly guilt trips, I can and do grow stronger with him. A similar book, Mommy-CEO (Constantly Evaluating Others) 5 Golden Rules, by Christian family columnist of Parent to Parent, Jodie Lynn, also tells moms to be all you can be with God. She also offers the best parenting tips ever and wrote a wonderful prayer in the back of the book that I pray each day. She too says to allow God to direct your life and be still and listen to what he has to say about family, love, problems, children, and the busyness that keeps you from him. Both of these books make an incredible life changing effect on daily life and sets your heart chirping again. Along with these two books, there is one other book, The Purpose-Driven Life, by Rick Warner, which is also a must have. If you want to finally take back your life, still give to others but not felt used or guilty for doing so, buy all three books and for goodness sake - give them away as gifts to as many people as you possibly can and put Martha in TIME OUT!
Rating: Summary: Review from a Recovering Martha Review: I have just finished reading this book and am planning to order it for all my friends! Joanna Weaver writes from her own experience. She does not present herself as an expert, having already mastered intimacy with God. Joanna shares her struggles and reveals the ways she has grown, which is encouraging to anyone who has ever struggled with the same issues. Mrs. Weaver's style of writing is straight forward with many concrete examples and incredible word pictures. This book has lots of practical tips for balancing work and worship without feeling guilty!
Rating: Summary: Requires an Annual Reading Review: I have read this book 3 times now and each time God speaks to me in a different way--where I am at that moment. I am a classical Martha, but after reading this book, was told I had "softened"--which is a good thing. After reading "Secrets of the Vine" and this book, I find a constant desire to spend more time "abiding" and "sitting at Jesus' feet"--which will be a life-long desire. This book is a must-read for any Christian woman who desires to grow in her faith and walk with Christ on a daily basis.

Rating: Summary: Great for Women's Bible Study Review: I just finished studying Joanna Weaver's wonderful book with my women's Bible Study group. Most of us in the group tend to be "Marthas" but we learned so many things about the joys and rewards of learning to have a "Mary" heart. We have referred to this book over and over again as we encourage one another--as Joanna Weaver encouraged us--to put aside the busy-ness of our lives and concentrate on what's really important. The side bars and anecdotes make this book easy to read. In fact, several of us had trouble stopping at the end of the chapter each week! Highly recommended!
