Rating: Summary: Speaks Directly To Your Heart Review: First off I read some of the other reviews and all were positive but one and if you will read that ONE person's profile, he is negative toward most of the books he reads... Most of the reviews feel the same way I do and that is this is one of the most "reader friendly" Bibles I have ever read. I have read many translations and this one is so Powerful... Dealing with today issues and how to apply the Bible to those issues in our life today. This Bible is written at an 8th grade level,so is very easy to read. LIFE APPLICATION is just what it says.. To apply what we are reading to our lifes.. It begins by knowing and understanding God's Word and it's timeless truths. But you cannot stop there. If you do, God's Word may not change your life, and it may become dull, difficult, tedious, and tiring. A good application focuses the truth of God's Word, shows the reader what to do about what is being read, and motivates the reader to respond to what God is teaching. All three are essential to application. And then finally "Application" is putting into practice what we already know..... I bought this translation of the Bible for my son's 25th birthday and after getting it home and reading it, I want one for myself... A Very Beautifully Written Translation...
Rating: Summary: Great Buy Review: I bought this one for a friend of mine who was new to Bible Study. It instantly helped him understand the Bible even more. Like the title implies it's great at applicating the Bible's verses in every day modern life.
Rating: Summary: Sounds strange to write a review on the Bible, but... Review: Yes, it seems strange to write a review on the Bible, but... here it goes...It's been said that many people don't understand the Bible because they don't read it. And, they don't read it because, let's be honest, there's much in it that's difficult to understand (so you get into a bit of a cycle here-- it's hard, so you don't read, so you don't understand, so it's hard, so you...). That's where this book enters the scene... And, here's how it's helped me (this was the first copy of the Bible I bought AND actually read-- I'm still working on the understanding it part-- and the "living it out" part even more). First, the NIV text is very readable (moreso than King James and even some of the other modern translations). It reads a lot like you might talk. You can understand what it's saying, then, without weeding through the "thee's" and "shalts" and "bidsts" etc... In my opinion, a more readable translation makes it more enjoyable to read, makes it more likely that you will read... and insures that you comprehend more as you do read. Second, the Life Application Bible provide great information in the margines (including notes for just about every verse, personal profiles of many people in the bible, and small write-ups on other relevant topics and events). You can read biographies about people you are meeting in the stories, view the maps to see where they are where they've been, and make quick personal applications. That, in effect, is what this Bible is about-- both reading and comprehending the Word of God so that you can live it out (the hard part). If you buy this Bible (any Life Application would be like this, as well, it would just be a different translation) you will, in all seriousness, have a commentary, small Bible dictionary, and a few maps and biographies with you. If you're searching for a study Bible, or a first "adult" Bible... go ahead and get this one. If you already have an NIV version, get the Life Application version of the NASB, or NKJV...
Rating: Summary: Life App. Study Bible: NIV Review: This bible is one of the best versions out there. It's very easy to follow and understand. It has outlines and footnotes that allow you to apply each verse to everyday life.
Rating: Summary: NIV Life Application Study Bible Review: this is a great tool for life. easy to read and understand.
Rating: Summary: Excellent combination study and application bible Review: I have used this bible for many years to read and study God's word. It is an excellent study bible in that it provides important information and insights into the historical context and meaning of the text. It also addresses text where different interpretaions are possible and may affect the meaning. It also provides excellent insights into how to apply God's Word to your day to day life as a Christian. I started using this bible when I was a new believer at close to the age of 40. I still use it today, 13 years later. It's an all around good bible regardless of your degree of bible knowledge and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Serious problems with the NIV Review: The NIV utilizes a thought for thought translation principle rather than the more literal word-for-word principle of versions like the NASB or KJV. If you compare the NIV to these versions or to the word-for-word translation in an interlinear, you will notice it often differs significantly. And when does, it will either be because the NIV is not translating words found in the Hebrew and Greek texts, or the NIV is adding words not found in the original texts. And even worse, these added words are not offset from the original God-inspired words by being placed in italics like the NASB and KJV do. A simple example of the former can be seen in Joshua 1:8. In this verse, the NASB has 50 words while the KJV has 48 words, but the NIV only has 30 words. You don't need to be a Hebrew scholar to figure out that the NIV has left out quite a bit here! And a simple example of added words not being indicated can be seen in 1Cor 7:9. The NIV adds the words "with passion" at the end of this verse without any indication it has done so. Altogether, there are probably thousand of added and omitted words in the NIV. To me, this indicates serious problems with the NIV. I discuss in further detail the problems with the NIV and similar versions in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.
Rating: Summary: Warm, thoughtful, and helpful Review: I do not want to offend readers of this review, or turn anyone off to Christian believers, but I found the content of some reviews of this study Bible to be both misleading and disturbing. We should leave to those who are educationally qualified the task of commenting concerning theology and translation accuracy. Certainly, I would not consider myself a theologian or Bible scholar, but I have read and studied the Bible in various translations over the past 30 years (I'll be 50 in September). Personally, I am enjoying reading this version, and find it to be an excellent compliment to others that are "more scholarly". We are all entitled to our opinions, but when expressing them, let's do so prayerfully, with supporting facts, and humbly...especially when dealing with God's Word and the work of those who try to help others understand it. We are cautioned in that Word not to be judgmental, lest we ourselves come under judgment, and to be careful not to be stumbling blocks to others. In closing, to those who are looking for a Bible version that will help them understand God's Word better, I can say that this translation and the explanatory content that accompanies it are helpful to me.
Rating: Summary: Pictures good, theology bad Review: The Good things about this book are the maps, timelines, and in some cases, the introductions. Each page is about half scripture and half commentary(except in the psalms and proverbs, where there is less commentary). This book not a very good place to study the Old Testament, being simplistic in it's interpretations and sometimes downright false. It says things like "Reuben slept with his father's wife" and "Tamar was a shady character" which thousands of years of Jewish wisdom say are not true. If you want to study the Old Testament, check out "Bible for the Clueless but Curious", or some other source. The notes in the New Testament are helpful when describing historical habits, but is not convincing in truth. All in all, reading this bible(NT+comm.) has convinced me that I could never be a Christian, which I doubt was the authors' intent.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Everyday Application Review: This study bible is a great tool for every day application. The study part is written in layman's terms so you can understand easily! I recommend it for those of all different shapes and years in their walk!
