Summary: This bible is so helpful!
Review: I was in the market for a Bible that helped to shine light and understanding on God's word. Some (the Old testament) is hard to understand. But the writers of this Bible have put so much helpful information on every page. It helps me to meditate on the Scriptures, and to apply them to my daily life. This Bible brings to life the authors, the times in which they were written, and how they can benefit us today. It is truly "life's application bible".

Summary: Great all-around Bible for devotion, study and teaching
Review: I made a lot of comparisons between different Bibles before I finally settled on the Life Application Study Bible and it is the one that I recommend to anyone who wants a good Bible for everyday reading, in-depth study and teaching.

This Bible is packed with footnotes, charts and other references that shed so much light on the scriptures. Each chapter includes a summary of what it is about, who wrote it, to whom it was written, when it was written and other great information. It also includes timelines to give you an idea of what was going on elsewhere in the world when different Biblical events were taking place. One of the things I really enjoy of this Bible is that it points out discrepancies between the original manuscripts and where there is uncertainty about the original meaning of some passages, the Life Application Study Bible notes them with the most likely and other possible meanings.

Summary: The finest DEVOTIONAL study Bible on the market.
Review: The Life Application Study Bible perfected a trend in the production of Bibles that began about thirty years ago. Prior to that most of the Bibles published were plain text or reference editions. These were limited in that they provided the uninformed reader with no explanatory guide through the difficult pages of Scripture. Two types of Bibles began to emerge. First, study Bibles, which focused primarily of historical, literary and theological questions. Second, "devotional" Bibles, which catered primarily for individual spirituality (i.e. what does this mean for ME?). The NIV Life Application combines both these approaches in a single attractive volume and is perfectly suited to anyone with no special expertise in biblical studies and especially helpful to those who want to read the Bible as a way of deepening their own spiritual life. The notes are not exclusively "spiritual" and "personal" but do provide answers to difficult critical biblical questions. The format is clear and easy to read. The LAB comes in various translations, including the NIV and the New Living Translation. In short, the LAB is without question the finest DEVOTIONAL study Bible on the market.

Summary: A wealth of information for the growing Christian.
Review: Let's face it, if you are considering this Bible you are most likely not searching for the ultimate end all version of a book which will change your life. You are more than likely an individual who has already made that all important personal decision in your life to follow Christ. And you are also most likely someone who picked up either your family bible or the one you have heard so much about (KJV) and tried to read it. While I will always maintain personally the KJV contains the most beautiful and poetic scripture (maybe most accurate based on original texts, I'm not a biblical scholar, just a Christian), there are times when I feel overwhelmed tackling chapter upon chapter of thous arts thines and ye's.

Many years ago I received a copy of the NIV and found it much easier to read and understand than my KJV, albeit less poetic. I remembered this after I had been born again and searched for understanding in my new life. As I stated earlier, if you are considering this particular Bible, you are most likely NOT interested in an evaluation of the NIV translation, nor the Bible itself. I'm writing under the assumption you already like the NIV translation of the Bible, and want to find a Bible which can help you bring the Word of God, as well as it's context and surroundings, closer to you, so you can apply them to your life, right now.

The life application bible has done this for me. Of the voluminous text, I have read and am rereading the New Testament, and am roughly 600 pages shy of reading, then rereading the Old Testament--including all footnotes--2235 pages in all. I have an understanding now of the Bible I would never have thought possible through self study. The character profiles have helped immensely to understand the people behind the scripture, and put into grasp the truth of the words I have read.

If you are looking for a Bible which will assist you in understanding the sometimes overwhelming text, this particular version can help a young (in faith) Christian solidify his or her beliefs, and more importantly, to understand the Word upon which his or her faith is based. Is there room for other translations than this? Of course. And as one grows in faith, more scholarly Bibles are available. The Life Application Bible fills the need it advertises in my opinion, and I am very grateful to have found it.

Summary: A wealth of info, a great tome...
Review: How does one review the Good Book? With trepidation I suppose? Or not, for others... Here I am going to review it like any other book. You probably don't care about my feelings on the subject matter so I have limited myself to the book itself.

I've had this particular Bible since it was first released and have found it to be a fascinating read with enlightening footnotes and sidebars related to history. Introductions to each book provide the reader with info on the Author, time of writing, location of writing, circumstances under which the book was written, and to whom the book was written. Most 'study' Bibles include this sort of information. This one however, includes interesting footnotes and profiles of major characters including their strengths and weaknesses. There are also in-depth sections related to Bible prophecy, specifically those that were fulfilled by Christ, and the inter-relationships of the Gospel accounts, how they show different perspectives on the same events and how each tends to highlight different themes or events. Also included are a helpful index in the back and a well-written introduction about the origins of this particular study edition. Study maps in the back provide a good reference point for many of the accounts contained within.

I have had this Bible for years and I've enjoyed reading it. A more serious study of these texts might look to a Ryrie or Scofield study Bible or perhaps John MacArthur's revised New King James version which includes much info and disection of the original Greek and Hebrew texts. Hence the minus one star. Most people are not scholars of Hebrew or Greek so this rating can be taken with a grain of salt.

A good Bible for the starter or the mature believer. The Life Application Study Bible is easy to read and thought-provoking. Careful tho, these words may just change your life. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Indeed.

Summary: Is this Study Bible right for you?
Review: -------------------------------------------
Is this Study Bible right for you?
-------------------------------------------

Choosing a Bible is very personal and often emotional decision. There are so many different Study Bibles because each takes a different approach.

The Life Application Study Bible has earned a wide following with its excellent charts, diagrams, and tables.

Other Study Bibles such as the NIV Study Bible attempt to be as factual as possible in their commentary. Its study notes try to explain references and historical context. They do not attempt to apply God's message to your life. They try to provide facts to help you build your own personal relationship with God.

The LA Study Bible's dust jacket claims something very different from the rest:

"...Its notes not only explain difficult passages and give background information about bible life and times, but they go a step further - they also show how God's Word speaks to every situation and circumstance of your life..."

If you want to consider a variety of opinions, you might consider doing an Amazon search in Books for "William Barclay." His books often present a number of opinions, often from opposing points of view. The LA Study Bible viewpoint is sometimes one of the most extreme.

If you want to be told one perspective to apply to your life, the LA Bible may be perfect for you.

If you want to find your own personal relationship with God, you might want a more objective and informational commentary such as the NIV Study Bible or other Study Bibles.

The NIV Study Bible might also be one to consider if you want a basic Subject Index or Concordance included. The NIV is also available in a rugged hardcover version like a college textbook or a less expensive paperback version. The LA Bible's dust jacket may not hold up as well to wear and tear. Also the NIV Study Bible has twice as many study notes and footnotes.

Whatever you decide, the most important thing is to read any Bible!

Summary: For "weaker brothers," as Paul would say
Review: I own several Bible translations and Bible commentaries, and was interested in this one to get a fresh perspective on the Word's relevance to modern life. However, rather than providing intelligent commentary designed to help the reader reflect on God's purpose and how that purpose can unfold in the reader's life, the authors seem to define "life application" as providing canned, rigid, simplistic behavioral dictates based on their own interpretations, which are sometimes lifted out of thin air rather than based on Scripture, and which they then liberally embellish with modern fundamentalist social and political commentary. These dictates are often given in the negative, with "Don't think..," "Don't do..," "Don't make the mistake...," "Beware of...," etc., showing up on almost every page. The notes often also attempt to instill fear in the reader using the tone of a fire-and-brimstone revival-tent preacher, with comments like "Let your misfortunes bring you to your senses and to the merciful God before it is too late."

This type of commentary may be useful for the people Paul referred to as "weaker brothers," types who, due to their uncertainties in faith, are looking for someone to interpret Scripture for them and force-feed them dogmatic rules to live by. The more mature Christian, however, will probably be turned off by the arrogant, condescending tone of the "study notes," and would do better by sticking to Scripture itself, along with a Bible dictionary, concordance and commentary (and talks with a good pastor!).

Summary: What a Great Bible for Today's Way of Life
Review: There are so many good things about Tyndale's "Life Application Study Bible" (LASB) that I'm not sure where to start. The negatives are short and quick: (1) it contains too much typology, interpreting far too many events in the OT as announcing Christ, e.g., the burning bush was not Christ, but God himself; (2) it tends to get a little preachy in places; and (3) after a careful reading I found sixteen misspellings and intertext reference errors (which I submitted for correction in the next edition to the publisher).

But that's nothing compared with what you get: a set of concise book, event, and character outlines that are unmatched in current Bible publishing. The point of the LASB is to relate the Bible to our lives today, and not the way we lived 400 or even 2000 years ago; in other words, LASB's goal is to make the Bible directly relevant to its reader. It certainly succeeds.

Perhaps its least noticed but best feature is its one-column text format, giving the reader full verses. The poetry of the Psalms and within the prophetic books is retained and in metered format to distinguish it from prose and didactic sections. Loaded with footnotes explaining not only the what, where, who, but the why. The editors tell you WHO James is, and who his brother is, and give you hints to distinguish him from other Jameses. Each book is set up with an introduction, along with a "blueprint" model that gives the major themes of the book; a separate "megathemes" (meta is the proper word) section lays out the thematic significance of the book with explanation; and finally a "vital statistics" section that gives a quickview of the book's setting, key people, purpose, etc. The maps in the back are quite good, too.

So there's no reason you won't want this Bible, even as a supplement to more scholarly bibles like the New Revised Standard Version Oxford Annotated Edition. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Trouble understanding the bible? Here's your answer
Review: Have you read the bible and at the end of the passage didn't understand what you just read? Then you haven't used the Life application bible. It explains the bible in everyday words/stories. Forget King James, this is the last bible you'll ever use!
