Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: This is an eloquent and detailed book, full of scholarly facts and based upon extensive research. Mlle. Pernoud, "'la grande dame' of French historical writing", was probably the foremost expert on Joan of Arc, and she is famous both for her scholarship and her engaging writing style. Better yet, she stands aside and lets Joan do the talking. While "Joan of Arc, By Herself and Her Witnesses" makes for easier reading, this one covers a lot of information not found in the above book. Both would be good choices for anyone studying the subject.
Rating: Summary: Great Story Review: This is great history, but like all history it takes a bit of "thinking" to get into. It's not the kind of book you can curl up with on a rainy Sunday afternoon. But if your someone who wants to know more about Joan of Arc and what she went through, than this is the book for you. It has wonderful detail and covers everything from her birth to her horrible death. It covers what others thought of her. It covers her first visit from the "angels" untill her last, it shows some of her doubts and fears. She was a women before her time, one who would later shape the women of today. After reading this you may want to follow up with An Army of Angels a fiction novel, but with the historic detail in it you would swear it was the real thing. Wonderful book. A must read before the movie comes to tv in May '99'.

Rating: Summary: One of the best books on Joan of Arc Review: This is one of the definitive biographies on Joan; and Regine Pernoud is one of the foremost experts. This title is pretty comprehensive and very readable. I have read over a dozen books on Joan, and Pernoud is definitely one of the top three author-experts. I liked her other book a little better: "Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witnesses." But it does not include as much historical material (background, events, commentary). The telling of the story from Joan's own words and the testimony of those who knew her puts "Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witnesses" on the top of my list. If you really want to feel like you walked with Joan, read Mark Twain's fictional diary, "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc," told from the point of view of her childhood friend-later-scribe. One of the greatest reads of my life! A Book that really changed my perspective on a lot of things.
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended Review: This is possibly the best book about La Petite Pucelle to be released in the last few decades: Regine Pernoud presents the evidence without injecting bias or speculation into the mix, and also includes the text of Joan of Arc's surviving letters and other relevant information. Along with her other books (such as "Joan of Arc, By Herself and Her Witnesses"), this is a must-read for anyone who wishes to study the historical Joan.
Rating: Summary: An eye opener to an unique historical figure. Review: What a great book. The authors have created a comprehensive and detailed historical portrait of Joan The Maid based on actual facts. My favorite part of this book is the comprehensive list of characters involving in the life of Joan of Arc. This list made it easy to reference all the different dukes, counts, kings and other names mentioned in the book. I strongly recommend this book.

Rating: Summary: other factors affecting Joan of Arc,;s history Review: What happened to Couchon? How did the church and the Pope view these trials. Why didn't King Charles, her generals or the French people intervene?
