Summary: An outstanding edition. . .
Review: . . .of a great spiritual work.

Every Christian, whether Protestant or Catholic should read and inwardly digest this powerful book.

Brother Lawrence was the sort of Christian who lived his life in quiet obedience to his God, and spent every moment he could in God's presence -- whether in chapel worship, working in the kitchen, on business trips for his monastary, etc.

His maxims for living a profound Christian life are not difficult to grasp -- they just take a lifetime to put into practice.

This new translation, edited by the late Baptist scholar Hal Helms, is a valuable addition to the "Paraclete Press" line of Christian classics.

May this book bless you, as it has blessed me.

Summary: The best edition of this amazing little book
Review: A friend told me about this wonderful little book and by providence I purchased this edition as my first copy from amazon.com. The book I received looked different from the one they show here on the site, but it was published by Fleming H. Revell, as shown. The Preface is wonderful and tells the story of Brother Lawrence, preparing you for the text within. When I bought an additional copy from a local bookstore for my graduating neice, I was shocked to find out that the copy (published by a different publisher with a very different Preface) was much more mind-driven and so much less loving! In my opinion, this is the copy to get if you want a true experience of the Divine comfort and companionship Brother Lawrence knew. I've been growing closer to God for 40 years and this little book has skyrocketed me even closer. I hope it does the same for you. Peace. :) k

Summary: Learn the secret power of humility
Review: A rare gem is uncovered in the personal letters of Brother Lawrence. In centuries past, many humble and reverent men walked in a way of power that was at once noticed yet never broadcast. Brother Lawrence is one of these men. His written responses to questions reveal his simple secret to living a radiant life . . . practicing the presence of God. Aside from the suffering he always supposed would come (yet never did) the modern-day mystic finds Truth that has shaped the lives of the most powerful men history has recorded. This same Truth achieves breathtaking freedom in the individuals who dare to respond to it. Simple and timeless is the message. Powerful and life-changing is the effect. This is one book that needs to be upon the night stands of every person seeking total fulfillment. (These writings have been published in many forms. I recommend the publication from Seed Sowers which includes the diary of Frank Laubach as he set out on an adventure following the writings of Brother Lawrence.) Ingrid Williams (CURIOUSHAT@aol.com

Summary: Br. Lawrence gives us a great challange.
Review: Br. Lawrence is one of the great hidden treasures of the Catholic Church. His simple approach to union with God is easy to understand, yet gives us a great challange. His approach to the spiritual life, and the maxims he offers us are beneficial to all who read his work. If someone finds themselves "too busy" in life (and from time to time aren't we all) Br. Lawrence offers a great remedy.

Summary: The Constant Presence of God
Review: Brother Lawrence can be of enormous help to those of us seeking to grow closer to Christ. For one, there is no complicated methodology behind practicing the presence of God.

As Brother Lawrence says, "Lift up your heart to Him ... the least little remembrance will always be acceptable to Him. You need not cry very loud; He is nearer to us than we are aware of."

And so, the practice of the presence of God is to simply think of him often. As Brother Lawrence says, your friend (God) is always with you. Why would you cut off conversation with God when you would not be so rude to another person.

I enjoyed this book. It takes maybe one hour to read, but I have a feeling it will have a lasting impact on my life.

Summary: True Worship
Review: Brother Lawrence demonstrates what truly happens when one walks with God. The words and ideas of this will allow you to truly understand Thessalonians 5:17 when God calls those who walk with Him to pray continually. This book and man have inspired me and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. This book will teach you what true worship is and where it is found. It is found in the hearts of people that have been overwelmed by the awe-some love of Jesus Christ.

Summary: Expect Your Life to be Changed
Review: Have you ever read a book/article, heard a sermon, or had an experience that you sensed in the midst of it that your life would be changed forever? This is such a book! Bro. Lawrence, in a very simplistic and often repetitive manner, has solidified for me what it means to truly walk with the Lord, to pray without ceasing, and to experience God's presence in such a way that I can find joy in tribulation and be assured that He will never leave me nor forsake me...I mean really grasp it!! The repetitiveness isn't a drawback in the least...as the saying goes: "repetition is the mother of learning". I'm thankful that Bro. Lawrence doesn't give "how-to's". The manner in which his walk w/ God is shared provides a blue print or outline, yet challenges the reader to discover his/her own unique way of walking with, praising, and glorifying God with our entire lives and in all circumstances. It's refreshing to know that a monk over 300 years ago actually struggled w/ being distracted in prayer from time to time. Yet he was able to confess it, forgive himself, and try again. Read it and be blessed.

Summary: A Wonderful Example
Review: He showed me a wonderful example of the Christian life. His humble heard and his daily life with God was so challenging. While I was reading this book, I could also humble myself before Him and also before people. Whenever I feel so exhausted, I recall this book and gain new strength.
