Summary: A Boy's Life in Dust Bowl Oklahoma
Review: Cain McGee was heart-warming, at times so sad I cried and at other times so funny I would choke up with laughter. It's about a boy growing up in a big family on a small farm in a remote rural community in Oklahoma. His family is very poor and he had to make his own toys. For example, he made animals, houses, cars, and stuff out of cornstalks, using the hard outer bark as legs and arms and the soft inner stuff as the bodies.
Through the bad times and the good he was always coming up with things to do. He became a correspondent for the newspaper in a small nearby town, he organized a Lone Scout Tribe (The BSA had not reached his community), he sold Grit and Cloverine Salve and Colliers, and, most of all, he collected cereal boxtops and became the ace detective of the River Bend and joined the Junior G-Man Club on the radio.
