Review: James is a wonderful story teller. He knew the west, the horses, and the men he penned. The characters ring true and they are all damn good hands. The truth in his writing and his art is helping to preserve at least a memory of Montana ranch country.

Summary: Great Story by a Great Storyteller
Review: This was the first Will James book I read. I was about ten I guess, that would have been 15 years ago, and after finishing it I called every out-of-print bookstore in the city (Will James books had been out of print for 30 years by that point) and bought and devoured every one I could get my hands on. I still get excited if I find a nice pristine first edition, and have a medium sized collection.
James is a beautiful storyteller. Reading one of his books is like having a wonderful experience shared with you by a close friend. He doesn't use flowery prose or even proper english, but his characters immediately come to life and burrow their way into your heart. You can taste the trail dust and feel the reigns in your hand as you ride along with him.
Fantastic for kids, great for grown up kids too, especially those who dreamed of being a cowboy when they were a youngster.
