If you and your child want to go the very simple costume route and concentrate on an elaborate face design instead, you'll find a number of colorful ideas in Fantastic Fun Face Painting. Although several designs suggest definite costume ideas, including a monster, ogre, werewolf, ice fairy, evil queen, and a clown, most are fanciful full-face motifs that could accompany almost any costume, or be worn with ordinary clothes as the sole attention-getter. The book's drawback is also its strength: the whimsical Mardi Gras masks, the daydreamer, Swan Lake design, sports team logo, lightning-streaked sky, and others don't necessarily lend themselves to a particular costume; indeed, the kids shown here are often wearing ordinary clothing, there are no costume pointers, and what costumes are visible are often minimal. On the other hand, that leaves plenty of room for imagination--you and your kids can come up with your own ideas for outfits to complement these amazing faces. --Amy Handy
