Rating: Summary: A reflection of the past... Review: Being an educator of young children living in the heart of Appalachia, I wanted a regional book that would shatter the stereotypes of Appalachia. Instead, this book seemed to embrace them. Yes, many of the things were true, but they do not represent the Appalachia of today. This greatly disappointed me.The ideas represented in this book often reflect the history of Appalachia. I still use the book with my class, but we focus upon the "Then and Now." Unfortunately, if you live in another region of the USA, and if you are studying Appalachia, you might not realize that these are reflections from a past, not a true and current view.

Rating: Summary: The Book Transcends Age and Place Review: This book is an accurate and informative portrait of the Southern Appalachian region. It is a book full of tales, language excursions, recipes and asides into the Native American population that first settled the region. Although intended for children, the book transcends age and place. It is a page-turner for anyone interested in cultural diversity and mesmerizing prose.
