Rating: Summary: DON'T MISS this enthralling story Review: An amazing, AMAZING, story that lets your imagination run wild and takes your mind on a truly emotional journey. I read all 5 books in the space of 1 week I was that caught up; the next day after I bought Tomorrow, when the war began, i went back and bought the next four in the series because i was so in love with the characters. I still I feel as if I am frozen in time, sitting in that cold, dark paddock (at the end of Darkness Be My Friend) and I am waiting until the magical moment when I can rejoin the characters and follow them on more adventures in the 6th book. By the way I am 21 so I believe anyone of any age could enjoy these inspiational, motivating books by the brilliant John Marsden.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I will be honest. I didn't want to read this series. A lot of people I know had read the books as they came out, and raved about them, but I thought at the time that I didn't want to read another war series...which is all that i thought they were. Turns out I was wrong. I got a copy of Tomorrow When the War Began in a pile of second hand books from my Aunt. It was the summer holidays and I thought I might as well read it. I'm 18, by the way, studying at University, and I had previously read some of John Marsden's books and found them to be absolutely amazing. From the moment I picked up Tomorrow When The War Began, I was hooked. John Marsden is without a doubt one the best author that I have come across. His portayal of Ellie and the rest of the gang, with their faults, their emotions...everything about them, is so amazingly real. Tomorrow is in no way just another war book, as I previously thought. If you are over the age of 15, I would recommend it, especially for those up to the age of about 25...but even beyond that. After reading Tomorrow, I proceeded to buy the rest of the set, one by one, every day for a week. I was even getting so desperate to know what was going to happen next that I was buying and starting them in my lunch breaks at work. I have since basically forced one of my good friends, who also wasn't really into the idea of reading them, into starting, and she actually put down Lord of the Rings to finish the Tomorrow Series instead. My mum also read them all in the space of a week. Being Australian (I live not far from the bush in an area where places like Hell actually exist), Tomorrow is a book I can relate to very much. Anyone who doesn't read the series, and has the chance to, is really missing out on something great. Oh and for the people who wanted the names of the rest of the books: Tomorrow When The War Began The Dead of the Night Darkness, Be My Friend The Third Day, the Frost Burning for Revenge The Night Is For Hunting The Other Side of Dawn ADDED ON THE 14TH NOVEMBER 2003: I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW THAT JOHN MARSDEN HAS JUST RELEASED THE FIRST BOOK IN A NEW SERIES: THE ELLIE CHRONICLES, WHICH IS SET AFTER THE TOMORROW SERIES! I JUST BOUGHT THE FIRST BOOK "WHILE I LIVE". (I NOW HAVE NO MONEY LEFT) IT'S GOING TO BE AGONISING WAITING FOR THE REST OF THIS NEW SERIES...IT'S ONLY IN HARDCOVER SO FAR, AND THE BOOKSTORE SAID THEY HAD NO FUTURE RELEASE DATE FOR A PAPERBACK COPY.
Rating: Summary: The best series I have ever read! Review: I'm completely agreeing with the many people who say this series is great so i'll keep it short. I had to write a review, however, because Marsden change my world (during the time i was reading the books i watched very very little tv - which is impossibly rare-and i got through each book anticipating what would happen next, ploughing through each one in less than a week; again a rare thing). Basically Ellie writes the acounts of 7 aussies who go camping and when they return the find everyone missing. Australia has been invaded and is under war (with the parents and friends of those camping held as POWs). It's not just the story that makes this series special. It's the realistic portrayal of some of the warmest characters you'll ever come across in novels. I don't know what style marsden uses but his mind-think is awesome and entertaining, to say the least. If people from all over the world want a good reflection of an aussie check these books out. It's almost sad to see films like "Crocadile Dundee" and other crappy aussie flicks represent (apparently) "who we are". I've never seen "Croc. Dundee" and never will for obvious reasons. A true image of some aussie characters lies in Ellie, Homer, Fi, Lee and the others that journey through this fictitious war, making guerilla attacks on the invaders. Lastly, I wanna let everyone know Marsden has "re-opened" the series, so-to-speak. It's not quite the same deal but it's called "The Ellie Chronicles" and the first book is called "While I Live" and is already out. Go read it those who've read the tomorrow series - because it's just as good and sophisticated as the original series. Plus these set of books are ambigious in the direction they're going - I won't say anymore (or the premise) because it would give away the end of the tomorrow series but do check out his site(...)
Rating: Summary: Definitely a Must Read Review: I've just read that I have to keep this review to a thousand words. I'll do my best. This book grips you like you wouldn't believe. From the very first page you want to know more about Ellie and her friends. And the seven book series lets you do that and more. John Marsden has an amzing gift. He is a 51 year old man who so easily and accurately gets inside the head of this teenage girl. Although Ellie is in a situation where I know I will never find myself, her thoughts and emotions are totally realistic. As an Australian this book scared me witless, you'll know why as soon as you read it. And read it you must. Teenage, young adult or the elderly can read and relate. John Marsden, over the last 15 years, has given teenagers a voice. Adults could probably understand the teens in their community a lot better if they read John Marsden. In this book the stereotype of knife-wielding, music pumping semi-criminals is blown away as the main characters (teens) are seen as Heroes. Tough, brave and intelligent. And who knows, they may even save the day.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic ! Review: One of the best books I've ever read! This book is fantastic! When Ellie and her friends go bush, they come back to find that their country has been invaded. They fight back against the unknown enemy, and... I wont tell you, it'll spoil the book! I'm searching our school library every day so I can read "The Night is for Hunting" and I can't wait until the seventh and final book comes out later this year. If you read "Tomorow, When the War Began" you won't be disappointed! I also strongly suggest that you read the next five which are out. I think my favourites are "Tomorrow When the War Began"(1), " The Third Day, the Frost"(A Killing Frost)(3), and "Burning For Revenge"(5) These are all awesome books. Read them!
Rating: Summary: breathtaking read Review: One word: Excellent. Tomorrow, When the War Began and sequels would have to be one of the greatest series' that I have ever read. It has everything, from violence, to romance, to drama, to sadness, to jokes, to the completely uncalled for. A definite 5-star... if i could i would give it 6.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTICALLY FANTASTIC! Review: Seriously, you won't find a book series better anywhere.
The Tomorrow Series follows Ellie and her friends along to the depths of Hell and back - both literally and not so. Marsden - John to me - deals with the frightening issues of war, death, romance and taking action even when it will hurt. Plus, John's one of the best writers ever to grace the page, so I completely and utterly urge anyone over the age of 10 to GET HIS BOOKS OR LIVE A LIFE WITHOUT KNOWING THE BEAUTY OF JOHN MARSDEN'S WRITING!
P.S. I thoroughly recommend "Winter", "Checkers" and "Letters From the Inside" by John Marsden too. If you're interested in further Ellie adventures, order "While I Live: The Ellie Chronicles".
Rating: Summary: Thoughtful, interesting young adult series Review: This series, (Seven books in total), is the best series I have ever read. The story remains interesting, with enough action to keep young adults interested. The threat of war is always an interesting topic to read about, especially when a group of teenagers are thrown into the mix and work together as a team -- this series is, at times, very inspiring, and the attention paid to character detail is very much appreciated and gives the series great credibility. P.S. These reviews are for opinions, not for summarised versions of the novel/s themselves. That last review from Jessica made this book sound bad, since she doesn't have a firm grasp of the English language, and therefore cannot construct a favourable review.
Rating: Summary: What An Awesome Book! Review: Tomorrow, When The War Began is a great book. It is told by one of the main characters Ellie. A group of seven teenagers takes a camping trip to Hell. It's not really Hell, it's just a place that is isolated from the rest of the town. They have to travel down "Satan's Steps" to get there. The teens return home only to find that their country has been invaded. The group runs into another friend. They load up supplies and go back to Hell, now as a group of eight. I like this book because it is full of excitment. It keeps you on the end of your seat to the very last page. This book os also full of drama and a little bit of romance. There really wasn't any part of the book that I disliked. This book is unlike any others I have read. I loved this book and recommend ot to all teens, boys and girls.
