It had unfortunatly killed half of the stock and Ashleigh's family had to move. Ashleigh is devatstad and so she decides never to become close to a horse again. But then a weak filly is born at the farm and looks just like Ashleigh's old horse, Stardust. Will Ashleigh decide to take the risk and care for the filly when she finds out that no one else will?
This is a great first book in the throughbred series. Joanna is master at creating bonds between horse and rider and the voice is fresh and entertaing. Five Stars!
Rating: Summary: I luv this book!!!!!! Review: A Horse Called Wonder is the first of the TB series plus it is written by Joanna Campbell so it is like so obviously good. I have all the books and this is definitely one of the best simply because, it begins the tale. It's about Ashleigh, my fav character and her horse Wonder who is a weak foal who noone believes will survive. That is except for Ashleigh, and through her faith, hope, and dedication, Wonder survives to become a famous racehorse and good broodmare. Joanna Campbell has woven a beautiful story full of emotion and vivid descriptions about a girl's love for a horse.Ashleigh and Wonder stayed together until some idiot decided to kill Wonder. And when you remember Wonder when she grew up, u would feel really sad that she died cos, she was the only part of the old TB series.U would feel really pissed off too. Ashleigh might act really horrible about Wonder's death, but when you read this book, u would know why, she did that. I mean, Ashleigh and Wonder had like this bond, and they stayed together, from Wonder's birth to death, it is really, really sad. U would want to cry. Anyway, this book is kind of like a memory of Wonder and how Ashleigh and Wonder got together. It is definitely a must-read. I totally recommend it.
Rating: Summary: This is how it all started. Save the legacy! Review: A Horse Called Wonder is the perfect start to my favorite series, Thoroughbred, which I have been reading for six years-since I was seven. In this book we are introduced to Ashleigh Griffin, whose family has just lost their breeding farm. Ashleigh swears to never love another horse after having to sell Stardust, her beloved mare. But Everything changes when Ashleigh meets Holly, a chestnut Thoroughbred mare that reminds Ashleigh of Stardust. The old mare is in foal with her last baby. When the foal is born, it is a beautiful copper-colored filly called Wonder; she is too weak to stand and so begins Ashleigh's fight for the foal's life.
The touching story of Ashleigh and Wonder illustrates the incredible bond between a girl and her horse. It isn't babyish or too unreal as some books are. One can't help but adore charming Wonder and root for Ashleigh as she struggles through obstacles to help the filly. A Horse Called Wonder teaches about life, love, and responsibility. With its beautiful cover art, A Horse Called Wonder is the perfect start to your collection of the incredibly one-of-a-kind horse racing series, Thoroughbred. This book is simply amazing and is obviously written by a very talented author. You won't be disappointed.
I love this book because it is written in a radiant, realistic way with humor, candor and the quiet scenes between a girl and her horse. Tears come to my eyes when I read about Ashleigh's heartfelt struggle for Wonder's life. I cheer on the little chestnut filly and bond with Ashleigh, her family, and Charlie Burke, the beloved old trainer who helps Ashleigh with Wonder.
The Thoroughbred books are the only products I ever buy from HarperCollins. I own nearly all the books and have been a fan since the beginning. This series is greatly loved by many and HarperCollins will disappoint countless fans young and old if the series is ended so randomly (suddenly after #72). HELP SAVE THOROUGHBRED! Go to www.whitebrookfarm.com to find out how you can help. Sign the petition (only once please) and don't let Thoroughbred end! Ashleigh and Wonder have had their challenge. Now this is ours.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I absolutely LOVE this book!!!!!!!!! It's definately the best book in the thoroughbred series! I mean, when I first got this book, I read through it in one day. Ashleigh, Wonder, and Charlie are totally my favorite characters in the series.
Rating: Summary: Great foundation to a great series Review: I began reading Thoroughbred when I was in the third grade. Now I'm a freshman in college. This series has stood through the tides of time, remaining one of my favorites of all time.

Rating: Summary: Great for horse lovers! Review: I have read many, MANY books in the Thoroughbred series (#1-18, 20-32, 34; Ashleigh #1, 4; Ashleigh's Thorughbred Collection #2; Super Special #1-4) and I have enjoyed reading all of them.
A Horse Called Wonder is about a twelve-year-old girl named Ashleigh. Her family's breeding farm was wiped out by a terrible disease, including her special mare, Stardust. So her family decide to start over as breeding managers at a famous racing stable called Townsend Acres. There, after what happened to Stardust, she vows to herself never to get close to another horse. But when a small, sickly foal is born who no one thinks is going to survive - or is even worth saving - is born, she can't help herself and nurses it back to health. Because of this, the filly is named Ashleigh's Wonder and (in later books) becomes on of the greatest race horses of all time.
The only thing about this series is that they are very fast-moving for a quite a few books, so if you skip one, you basically have missed a whole year of story and have no clue what's happening. So you must read them in order. Though, once you get into the late teens and twenties it is not as necessary.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves horses or animals. It is a great book that expresses the strength of the relationship between a determined girl and a very special filly.
Rating: Summary: A WONDERFUL Book Really Emotional Review: I LOVE this book! I can't stop reading this and other TB books. Wonder,Pride, and Star are my favorite horses and Ashleigh and Samantha are the best. I own 26 TB books and i love them all i didn't get into horses until 4th grade when i started reading these books. Which is surprising because my uncle is a steward at the thoroughbred race tracks (what a krinkydink) This book is so emotional it deserves 10,000 stars but this site only allows up to 5 (sigh)I am only a beginer rider and the only horses i have ridden are two thoroughbred exracers. If you havn't read this book than get to it cause you will positivly love it you will be hooked on the TB series after this book! (that isn't a bad thing) TTFA nicole
Rating: Summary: A Father's Bedtime Story Review: I started reading this book for my five year old daughter just before bedtime because she has strong interest in horses and I can't put it down. I look forward to getting home each evening just to read to her. It is an excellent book with an engaging storyline and full of horse knowledge. As we read, we are learning all about horses, horse apparel and how thoroughbreds are trained and bred. Its been a wonderful way to introduce my daughter to horses and really spend some wonderful quality time with her. I can't wait to start reading her the next book in the series.
Rating: Summary: Great start to the worls's best series! Review: Oh my gosh this was SO good! It was about Ashleigh Griffen, a 12 year old, who's parents breeding farm is destroyed by a virus. Now they are breeding managers at Townsend Acres, and Ashleigh falls in love with a mare named Holly, who soon gives birth, but the foal is weak. Now Ashleigh must forget her hurtful past and try to save the filly. I thought this book introduced this unbelievably awesome series well. But make sure you read this book first, it makes more sense and makes the series more enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: best start for the best series Review: This book is the first jewel in the treasure that is the Thoroughbred Series. Here we first meet a determined girl with big dreams; and a small, underestimated filly with big potential. Ashleigh Griffen nurses Wonder through her rough beginnings and works hard to turn her into a fine yearling so that Mr. Townsend (the owner of Townsend Acers the Thoroughbred farm) will not sell Wonder off at auction.
This book is full of so much amazing writing. One can't help but love sweet Wonder and cheer for Ash as she struggles through her own obstacles to help the filly. One other thing that I love about this book is the character Charlie Burke. He used to be the head trainer at Townsend Acers until he was replaced with someone younger. Charlie had supposedly run out of usefulness...But Ashleigh discovers an amazing friend and mentor in the old trainer, and Charlie's experience saves Wonder on many occasions. Throughout the rest of the series, Charlie is one of the major reasons Wonder goes on to greatness. I think that this demonstrates a great lesson for us. Just because someone is old doesn't mean that they are useless. Charlie became a dear friend and loved one in Ash's life. Just something to think about...
I have been an AVID TB fan since this very first book and even though new authors have come and gone and the series has hit some rough spots, this does not call for Harper to end its publishment! I have been a fan since the beginning and will be to the end, but I think that Ashleigh and Wonder's legacy should not just end like this. This series is greatly loved by many and Harper will disappoint many fans young and old if the series is ended so haphazardly (abruptly after #72). Keep the spirit of a young, determined Ashleigh and her special filly Wonder alive! HELP US SAVE THOROUGHBRED!! Go to www.whitebrookfarm.com to find out how you can help. Be sure to sign the petition (but only once please!). Don't let Thoroughbred end!
