Rating: Summary: the best book in the dear america series! Review: A Coal Miner's Bride is about a girl who travels to America from Poland to marry a coal miner that her father has picked out for her. She hates the idea of going to a foreign country and marrying a man she does not love, or even know. When I first read this book I thought it was okay but otherwise not something I would spend my money buying. I was wrong. I read it again and I love it! It is my favourite book in the Dear America series. I think it is very interesting and when ever I start reading it I can't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended Review: Being that I am interested in genealogy and my paternal lines originated from the coal mining town of Eckley, which is near Hazleton, I felt a connection with this book. It gave me insight into how my family may have lived upon coming to the US from Europe. This is a good read for anyone- young or old- who would like to learn about what it might have been like for those of the past who lived in coal mining communities or those who had family that at one time worked in a coal mining town.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book, Especially for Polish Americans! Review: Contrary to the jokes, the Polish are NOT stupid, and Anetka Kaminska's diary of her life from Poland to America in the late 1800's proves it. Although she is only 13 or 14, she endures the pain of leaving her grandmother, best friend, and homeland, Poland, for America with her brother and a soldier for Russia to meet her Tata (father), with little more than her wit to suffice her. In America, she must marry a man she doesn't love, house people she barely knows, and soon suffer as a widow in her early teens with her husband's 3 young daughters. Yet one of Poland's most headstrong, fiery fictional redhead gets through it all somehow, with prayer, strength, and some of those brains the Polish supposedly don't have. At first I was a little wary of buying "A Coal Miner's Bride", not having ever heard of it before, but I haven't had a regret it yet, and I've read it several times. It's absolutely wonderful!
Rating: Summary: great Review: Even though I only skimmed this book over in the book store, I found this to be a great read and am looking forward to reading it fully when it comes in to the library. Thirteen year old Anetka is perfectly content to sit at home with her grandmother (Babicia) (?) (unsure spelling) and her brother, when her father, (who has escaped czarist Russia's Poland) writes to them from America, telling them he has found Anetka a husband. Anetka, who has just had a run in with Russian soldiers, leaves with her brother and a rebel soldier Leon, who takes her grandmother's place on the voyage, for America and realizes too late that her new husband's faults outnumber his perfections. He is nearly more then twice her age, has an obsession with his dead wife, and three children, one of whom is extremely cold to Anetka. I did not read this part perfectly, but Anetka did not seem that devastated by her husband's death. Instead, she works her hardest to keep things toghther and to convince herself Leon is always in her thoughts because he teases her, not because she loves him. This was a great book, and shows a different side of the Dear America books. In the other books, the girls write about how they feel about certain boys, but all of them get married in the Epilogue. Anetka becomes a married woman at 13. How strange is that?
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Fourteen year-old Anetka Kaminska lives in Russia with her grandmother and her brother Joseph, and her father is a coal miner living in Pennsylvania. Anetka is eagerly anticipating his return when, to her shock, they get a letter with steamship tickets in it. Mr. Kaminska wants her to come to America so she can marry! She doesn't want to leave, but she has to obey her father. Anetka, Joseph, and a private named Leon Nasvich travel to America and join Anetka's father. Anetka quickly learns that married life is much harder than she anticipated, and with the coal miner's union in full swing, Anetka finds it hard to care for her new husband and his three daughters. And when her husband is killed in a mining accident, will Anetka be brave enough to provide for her daughters and pay off the debt at the same time? Find out in this exciting book! I liked this book right from the start. It's so interesting! I was almost gad when Anetka's husband died so she would be free to marry Leon Nasvich. The three little girls sound so cute. And Anetka could do so many things! Make bag balm, make soap, etc. Compared to her, I can do literally nothing! This book is tops. Get it, read it, love it, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: My absolute favorite Dear America book Review: I do not read Dear America books anymore, because I consider them under my reading level. There is one exception, however, and that is this book. I absolutely love this book. It tells the story of a Polish girl named Anetka Kaminska, who travels to America with her little brother to reunite with her Tata (father), who has been living and working there for some time now. Traveling with Anetka and her brother is the handsome Leon Nasevich, a soldier of the Russian army. He goes with them after he gets into some trouble with the law in Poland and cannot stay there. Once in America, Anetka is to marry a coal miner twice her age who she does not even know, much less love. There is one problem: Anetka finds herself falling for Leon.
This is a great historical fiction novel filled with lots of details and romance. You should definitely buy this book, it is worth your money.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read Review: I have read alot of books over the past couple years, including many from the "Dear America" series, but in my opinion this is by far the best. This book gave me an excellent feel for the hardships the immigrants had to face. It has so much detail, it is nearly impossible to believe this book isn't a true story. Anyone, even the best scholars in the world will be tricked to belive this story in entirely non-fictional if there had been no title page. So if you're interested in reading an historical fiction book at its best, just pick up this book and immediatly be enertained.
Rating: Summary: the best book in the dear america series! Review: In the first few pages, the book seemed a little slow. Then on about the fifth page, the book really started to interest me. What was going to happen to this girl? Every free moment I had, I read this book. Just when one surprise ends, another starts. It was a book that i didn't want to end. With a fairytale ending, this book is exciting, sad, and thrilling all together. It leaves you reading on the edge of your seat. Plus, this girl was very young and had to put up with many hard tasks. This is a great book and I have recomended it to almost everyone I know. I will never forget reading this book because it made such a big impact on me.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read! Review: Of all the books I have read, A Coal Miner's Bride is definetley my favorite. It not only teaches you about the hard times in history, but it really touches your heart. Anetka Kaminska lived a wonderful life in Poland, but when her father, who Anetka says has "American fever", sends her a letter saying he has found her a husband, her dreams are shattered. After riding a ship with her brother Jozef and an "impossible" Czar soldier, Anetka finds out that her future husband hasthree young girls in desperate need of a good mother. But her husband, who terribly misses his wife, doesn't love Anetka as she hoped he would. When she expresses her feelings, things finally shape up for Anetka and her husband. But not long after he finally kisses Anetka good night, he dies in a tragic mining accident. Now Anetka must be a mother to her children and have boarders, including the "impossible" solsier,Leon, to pay off her husband's high debts. I have so many other words to tell, but that would give away theend
