Rating: Summary: Don't buy it Review: There are many reasons not to buy this book. #1 - Although the front indicates it is one in a series of "high interest" books, do not be fooled into believing it is a "high - low" book, one intended for a person with low level reading skills. The vocabulary is far too difficult.#2 - The pictures are wrong. The picture on page 35 is of Marines. Check out their eight-sided covers. #3- There are at least three pictures of students of the Academy Preparatory School, yet no mention is made of the prep school in the text. Either explain the prep school or stick to the original topics and include pictures of cadets "up on the hill." #4 - The title "Life Inside the Air Force Academy" is misleading. None of the information cannot easily be found on the academy's web site. There is nothing to indicate the author visited The Air Force Academy or made the effort to provide an "Insider's Look" <-- Title of the series of books. The text is pretty accurate and gives a fair general overview, but the lack of attention to detail in choosing photographs and vocabulary as well as there being no feeling at all of an "Insider's Look", puts its usefulness in question.
Rating: Summary: Life inside the Air Force Academy Review: With all due respect, I feel compelled to respond to nrenfree's review. As a youth services librarian I am always looking for high interest books for low readers, especially for teens and adults who want mature subject matter. Therefore, I appreciate Alagna's treatment of her subject. The caption on page 35 states, "Recent USAFA graduates can choose to serve in any of the five branches of the United States military." Thus the author chose a picture of the Marines--what's "wrong" about that? I'm afraid I don't understand point #3. I'm not an Air Force Academy expert and can't really speak to this issue. As for the title, I don't feel it is misleading at all! After having read the book, I do have a better understanding of the academy. I know I'll learn even more when my former shelver completes her stint there! I would recommend this title to public libraries for their juvenile and young adult collections.
